Aerboot 2010 – Update

From the extensive feedback received ‘off-forum’ the proposed Spring 2010 Indoor Aeroboot at Newark Air Museum looks set to take place on Saturday 17th April (confirmation of the date and format details will be announced after November 24th).

The two day Summer Aeroboot Aviation & Avionics Sale will take place as normal alongside Cockpit-Fest 2010 on Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th June, 2010; following the same format of the last 10 plus years.

Thanks for your feedback Air Ministry and I am pleased to try and explain the current system.

The Aeroboot mailing lists have been built up since the museum first started these events in about 1997; they comply with Data Protection (DP) legislation i.e. they are cleaned and updated in accordance with recipients wishes i.e. people are deleted from the lists by their request etc.

For the November 2009 event participation details were sent out to circa 100 contacts via email or post, all of whom have stood at a Newark Aeroboot.

In addition to posts on web-fora / museum website etc, event promotion details were sent out to circa 400 contacts via email and print; these comprise Cockpit-Fest participants; museum email contacts (fresh within last 12 months) and the museum membership. An additional mailing was made via the BAPC E-Groups system to an undetermined number of recipients.

One advert was published in an aviation magazine; plus a range of event listings / web-links in the aviation press and on various aviation websites.

News releases were circulated to approximately 30 local newspapers and radio stations – these are known to have been published in 6 titles for this event but this might be more.

Traditionally NAM tends to get more casual sellers during the summer event that runs alongside Cockpit-Fest, which is mainly attributed to the better weather. Also the local non-aviation types sometimes get switched off when they realise it’s focused on aviation items – perhaps it’s a Newark thing!

The idea of talking to David Farnsworth is a good one, however to get round the DP issues it might be necessary to send him materials (forms, envelopes & postage) and ask him to do the mailing on NAM’s behalf.

Further thoughts please – we do want to improve!

May I ask where/how the event is publicised? Is it internet forums such as this plus the museum’s own website, or is it publicised more widely?

I would have thought that your commendably low stall fees would have attracted a wider spread of sellers. For example, I wonder how you attract the casual sellers who maybe only have a few bits of shed/loft/garage clearout to shift? You used to see them in the early years of aerojumbling, but hardly ever these days; you’re quite likely to turn up a bit of treasure from these guys, too! Does advertising in local newspapers bring people in?

Just another quick thought – have you considered asking Dave Farnsworth for his mailing list, you may find a few interested parties now that Whitwick is no more.

This morning I’ve gleaned some visitor information from yesterday’s Aeroboot, which I thought I would share with everyone.

Yesterday there were 150 paid admissions, which might include a few Tractor Show refugees.

At a rough estimate 25 ‘cockipteer’ admissions using the free Cockpit-Fest passes; and perhaps 30 museum member free admissions (several noted as purchasing items for museum aircraft and securing props for Photo Shoots).

Some notable points made to the museum team were:

A possible loss of some ‘plastic model buyers’ due to the clash with the IPMS Nationals at Telford.

Minor traffic issues with Tractor event – sadly always a potential issue with increased Showground events (only resolved when NAM starts using its other access – Visitor Centre project 😉 ).

Start times will move forward and NAM will try to include a period of one hour set-up time before buyers are allowed in.

As previously posted April 2010 seems to be the favourite timing for the next event – to be confirmed.

BUT does NAM try to get more indoor space for sellers by hiring a marquee?

Despite its central location is there really the number of buyers to make an extended NAM event viable?

Further thoughts please – we do want to improve!

An after thought having seen AM’s post: Would people be prepared to pay a little extra to be housed more centrally (e.g. in marquee) rather than dispersed around the available pockets of space in Hangar 2?

Yes, it was a good day and nice to see so many familiar faces, whether veteran aerojumblers or fellow forumites/cockpiteers.

I managed to pick up a few things, but nothing to quicken the pulse.

I’d be interested to learn the attendance figures for the ‘jumble, though. From my lonely spot in the far corner, it seemed as quiet as Dave’s last “do” at Whitwick?

Regarding the questionnaire, I hope voting goes in favour of an 8 a.m. entrance for stallholders with visitors an hour later. Yesterday saw some confusion. At 8 o’clock, paying visitors started to arrive while half the stalls were still empty. If you are manning a stall single handed, it makes it difficult to wander around the hall unless you sheet over your table, something I hadn’t planned for. As a result, I only got to see some stalls in mid-morning during a lull.

As for packing up, I started at 1 p.m., but the last hour had been sociallising with other stall holders, the ‘jumblers had pretty much found their buys and departed by mid-day.

An expanded event in April sounds good. I think the organisers will have to work hard to attract more stalls and visitors in the current climate but it might be an early season winner. I look forward to it, if that’s what the Museum decides on.

Thanks to NAM for hosting the ‘jumble. It’s a hassle free event and the little gestures like a hot drink are appreciated.

p.s. Did anyone visit the veteran tractor show next door? If there was a tractor jumble on, I wouldn’t mind betting there was a bit of aero to be found; there often is at those types of events. I was too knackered to walk a few hundred yards to investigate!

Thanks to Newark Air Museum for putting on this event today, despite the early start time of 07.00 for dealers:eek:,it was a most enjoyable day,

It was good to meet up with forum members and friends alike and i even managed to sell a few things,

Just like Whitwick the event did not suffer too much from overcrowding but there was a good mix of enthusiasts and dealers, just enough to keep this event viable i think,

I am glad that we could help Wyvernfan again with his slow burning Wyvern project:cool:

Great Meet. at Newark today.

No wonder I couldn’t find Brucie today, (:D Happy Birthday ).

By the time I got into the AeroJumble after Horse trading outside in Car Park, most attendees were walking away. But after conferring with Air Ministry and Frank Miller, money and books and parts changed hands.( Every one wins–:D:D )

Yes ! that Walrus mainwheel was a surprise to see, looked in good condition too.

Got a lift down with Anon and Terry P. who both enjoyed themselves.

A good short, sharp, intense time and away seemed to be order of the day today. Brilliant.!!!! 🙂

Great to see old friends again.

Thought it was a good day all round and great to meet up again with a few Forumites.

Personally got a pair of ID switchboxes (thanks Air Ministry) and an oxygen economiser (TT18Timbo). Thanks to Stacey24b for pointing out the Chippy GA drawing for a pound 😀 and to David Collins for providing the wheels to get me there.

john

Great to meet you today John (and actually put a face to a name..we must have met so many times unwittingly before!) and glad you relieved us of that economsier!

Today proved better for “networking” than for sales/purachases, but that’s by no means a bad thing. Recovering from the 4:30 am reveille on the other hand has proved to be a slightly bad thing! 😮

It was good to meet up with a few people today at what seemed like a good event, where many contacts seemed to be made. 😀

A brief thank you message has just gone onto the news page of the museum website. At today’s event the stall holders were surveyed about the possible date of the spring 2010 Indoor Aeroboot at Newark.

At the moment the April date seems to be the preferred option (by a margin of 2 to 1). A final decision on the date and format of the event will be made by the trustees by the end of November;

If anyone has any other comments about the possible event on April 17th 2010 I will ensure that they are considered by the museum trustees before they finalise the date.

Well not at the actual boot, but i did collect the front glass panel for my screen.. albeit in two parts, but it will help as a pattern… thanks again to bamel for his help.

Wondering if anyone picked up that rather nice Supermarine Walrus main wheel and tyre? Very tempting i must say… i had to drag myself away in the end before i found myself with another project .

But overall i thought it was a good Aeroboot, plenty of chat and some interesting items on offer.

You picked nothing up from the boot Wyvern related? You clearly werent looking properly then as I did 😉

I look forward to the PM 😀

All the tables were set-up today for the event on Saturday, including a couple of late bookings that have been squeezed in. The following message has also been posted on the museum website to help people that are coming along on Saturday. 🙂

“The approach signage for an event this weekend on the Newark Showground is directing their traffic along the A46 route to Lincoln.

With this in mind we would like to suggest that stallholders and visitors to this weekend’s Aeroboot Table Top Sale approach the museum site via the A17 bypass route and then along Drove Lane.

When you turn left into the airfield site entrance (near the Motor Auction site) keep on the left hand side of the road and ensure that you turn sharp left again after approximately 40 yards onto the old airfield taxiway. The Showground marshals have been made aware of the Aeroboot event, but please do not let them direct you onto the main Showground car parking area.”

Sorry AM not intended to cause problems. 🙁

When I turned up at 7.30am to open the gates for the February 09 event there were 4 stall holders waiting (they told me they’d been there since 7.00am).

It seems whatever you do you can’t please everyone, that’s also why we don’t do a more expensive early bird rate.

Even when you try to get feedback, like for the possible April 2010 event; sadly you get little or no response! (see post #2) 🙁

For the record it also takes me 45 – 50 minutes travel to get to and from NAM!
