Sea Balliol at Brawdy.

Does anyone have any info on the circumstances of the Sea Balliol WL726 crash at an airshow at Brawdy on 4/8/56.. in which i think Lt John Mitchell was killed.?!

Oh for a time machine… what a waste.!:(

Could’nt agree more – but I suppose they just did not seem worth preserving back then (apart from the few Merlin 35’s which seem to be around). I will have my annual gaze at Cosford’s survivor on Sunday anyway.

Did someone say Sea Balliol at Brawdy? Here is a shot I took there on a misty day in 1963.

Much abliged sir.;) The Sea Balliol is a type you don’t hear much about and i understand it to be a fairly docile little aeroplane.. so was wondering what happened in this particular display.

Have had a look through Air-Britain’s excellent book ‘Fleet Air Arm Fixed-wing Aircraft since 1946’ and found the following details:

During aerobatics, after a dive and controlled stall turn onto the runway, appeared to complete the manouvre with adequate height, but at the last stage mushed into a depression beyond the runway and exploded on impact. Brawdy Air Day. Cat ZZ 4.8.56 (Lt J M Mitchell Killed)

Hope that helps.
