Harrier GR3 undercarriage wheels

I help out at an ATC Squadron. We have a harrier GR3 as a gate guard. After a few years outside it’s now in need of a refurb. We are looking for some spare wheels both front and rear main landing gear plus out rigger wheels. Has anyone got any information on where we might be able to find or source these items? We have tried RAF contacts but no luck so far.

Thanks

The change of mainwheels on a GR.3 is no great difficulty. The mains can be changed with a decent quality trolley jack. To do the nose you need a jacking beam and a couple of jacks or alternatively a friendly farmer with a loadall and strop to support the nose. PM me if you require any further help

KN, with your aircraft being within the MoD system you should be able to aquire parts through them. Parts can be moved and gifted within the MoD.
I would try Cosford where there are still a number of ‘old style Harriers’, Stafford for potential on shelf spares, and as mentioned above, RNAS Culdrose have a number of Harriers, some of which are retired, they also keep a spares stock for the dummy deck. The Disposal agency (DSA) are worth a try aswel, and where possible they will consider donating parts back to MoD.

I’ve just aquired a GR.3 hulk from ‘crash n bash’, but guess what? No wheels!

Stacey24b. Many Thanks. If you have tyres that would fit our GR3 XV752 ex 233 OCU, 1 Sqn & 3 Sqn that would be supurb and greatly appreciated. This aircraft is currently at Bletchley park outside the 2366 (Bletchley Park) Sqn ATC HQ.
The Sqn CO is arranging for crash and bash to come and help with a tyre / wheel change as long as we can source the parts.

erm this might need confirmation but i think gr7 and gr3 wheels are the same size if this is confirmed i can get you some worn but useable tyres from work but you’d have to source rims, i’m assuming you’d want to remove and swop at the same time

Many Thanks for the leads eveyone.

Stacey24b do you know if they still have the tyres they removed at Cottesmore?

freebird. We have followed up the Culdrose lead. The 5 or 6 GR3’s used by the school of flight deck operations were moved to the fire fighting school at Predannack Airfield when they were replaced by F/A 2’s & T8’s. However we understand the GR3’s have been moved from there but don’t know where yet. If any one has any idea about the whereabouts of these airframes could you let me know?

Another avenue you might want to try is the Flight Deck Operations/Dummy Deck unit at RNAS Culdrose. They used the Harrier GR3 and T-4s before they were replaced by the Sea Harriers.

Best of luck

There was a spare set at cottesmore, but the last time i saw them was when 3 sqn still had there gaurd aircraft there, you can try 3 sqn at coningsby as they might have taken them there, only 6 months ago the tyre bay at cottesmore had to strip all the tyres off the sea harrier NOS main wheels i think they are similar to gr3 items, but you can try and see if there’s anything with them
