Cockpitfest Wish List

Wondering whether cockpitters wish to post ‘wants’ to encourage some shed delving for parts to bring up to Newark?

The local BBC Report http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/2114 is currently showing sunny spells for Saturday and heavy showers for Sunday. [The report was generated using the museum post code so please ignore the Bottesford reference!]

So get that junk out!! 😀

Good weather!!!! anyone seen a long range forecast?

Sun means I have a stall and clear out the junk, rain means it all stays in the garage until next year

In my day-job I am an industrial chemist.

There are two ways of removing things – partition or dissolution.

The easiest is dissolving it –

The key thing in dissolution to remember is like dissolves like.

Water will only dissolve polar items (e.g. salt and sugar).

White Spirit/Turps dissolve very unpolar things e.g. tar, wax

Meths – Methylated alcohol – will dissolve at the middle to polar end.

Std paint thinners is acetone/toluene – good across the board as it is a mixture of a polar and a non polar solvent.

Acetone is also sold as nail varnish remover.

Perspex is polyacrylonitrile – a poly cyano compound.
Polycarbonate is stronger but very solvent susceptible.

Both are relatively polar – but also crystalline.
Dont use acetone on either as it will irreversibly damage them.

I would suggest that most sealants (except silicones) are likely to be complex cross linked polymers that are designed for high and low temperatures but will be closer to the non polar end than polar.

The problem is that without access to a chemical lab – most other solvents are not open access…

The alternatives are IPA and ethanol (booze).

As suggested the best option is to let it soak -so that if it is not fully dissolves – it may at first swell it – which will allow you to mechanically remove it.

If suggesting to use water/soap – you are using the partition process – where you are trying to get a little bit to be suspended in the soap in the water – a long process. This is what happens in a washing machine and in the sink.

…and is what XF940 used to get the covering off his new canopy. He had to use quite a lot of it mind!

4 bottles to do the Hunter canopy inside and out. It worked better than anything else I tried, and the warm soapy water mentioned in the previous thread as the ‘correct’ method, certainly didn’t touch the gunk after it had gone hard.

A tip … soak the area in meths for 5 minutes, then rub a rag soaked in meths over the same area and it should start to lift off. For really stubborn areas I used a ‘scraper’ made out of a plastic card (like a credit/ID card).

Mark G will attest to the task I had to clean the stuff off my canopy, and those of you that were at Cockpitfest in 2008 will have seen how well it came up; no scratches or areas damaged by chemical reaction.

HTH.

Mark.

I have tried white spirit…no chance!

We had a thread on this a while back. Meths is what the Hunter AP suggests and is what XF940 used to get the covering off his new canopy. He had to use quite a lot of it mind!

Thinners is good on Perspex – as long as it is Perspex – it can melt some of the other Polycarbonates!

….he is wearing a cone so will not appreciate any teasing!!

Tony, maybe we should all wear cones so he won’t look out of place? They would be useful means of identifying us as exhibitors instead of wearing a badge! 😀

….cut some original 40 year old perspex for the windscreen sides and cannot get the protective rubber off cos its gone pooey 😡

Have you tried meths? (for getting the rubber covering off I mean, not as a beverage )

Hello,

Ahead of Newark this coming weekend, if anyone has a Mk 4B Gyro gunsite available for sale/swap, you would really be helping the Hornet cockpit progress.

This mark was also used on Meteors and Sea Furies.

Please come and see me on the day if you can assist, or alternatively drop me an e-mail.

Thanks in advance,

Have no sight Dave but new reflecter glasses and sunshades if you want them..have you tried Mr. Parkhouse ?

Well I won’t be there but Jaguar parts can be passed on to 12jaguar or XM692 for me, that is unless they like the parts themselves. Mainly after bungees, HUD controller, TACAN, LOX gauge and nav hand controller, oh and also an early weapons aiming mode panel.

Cheers Paul

Just to reiterate

I will be there with Chipmunk WP927, if there are any Jag parts that Pauls after please let me know and I can either hold on to them for him or put you in contact with him

cheers

John
