Aviation attractions in London?

Hi. I have a few hours to kill in London tomorrow (27th) before meeting SWMBO and the man cub at Heathrow. Don’t fancy the RAF Museum because half the exhibits always seem to be shut, and I get very frustrated at not being able to take any photos in that gloomy main hall. Got Brooklands and the IWM in mind, but really looking for something new. Needs to be accessible by public transport. Any ideas please? Thanks in advance for any (polite :D) suggestions as to what I should do.

a bit late now

but I’d suggest the science museum as well, IWM as a second choice, both easy to reach.

Hey, you lot are brilliant. Thought I’d be lucky to get any replies at all. Don’t have too much time to spare so I think the DH museum is out this time. Saw HMS Belfast not long ago (Loved it. Got goosebumps imagining a real Naval engagement) Always been intrigued by the old Croydon Airport, but the visitors centre is only open one Sunday a month. Science Museum is currently favourite, but going to look here (see link) when I can (at work, so can’t spend too much time on the Interweb) Thanks again guys; mucho appreciatio.

Personally i’d reccomend the Science Museum – their superb ‘Dan Dare and the birth of hi-tech Britain’ exhibition is still on until October and has some interesting aviation exhibits, including a Bloodhound missile. As well as the historically important aircraft gallery of course

Seconded – and they have the demise of Britain’s airliner-industry hopes in that exhibition too, with a piece of Comet Yoke Peter and a model showing the hole where you don’t want one, from the investigation.

Another suggestion I felt well worth a look was the Battle of Britain memorial by Paul Day (the sculptor, not the driver, airframe) on the Thames embankment.

The nearest railway station to the DH Museum is St Albans on the Midland line from St Pancras, then it’s on the No 84 bus route, but not open Wednesdays, but then it’s a bit out of London, probably easier to get to DX.

To save time travelling, if you’re into aviation, aren’t you into Naval history as well, I’m just trying to promote a trip round HMS Belfast, easy to get to, tube to the Tower and an interesting walk across Tower Bridge. Quite an awesome exhibit, just to stand in that vast engine room is worth the admission fee, it also makes you appreciate how terrible it must have been for the crews fighting in such ships during any conflict, stuck below decks and not knowing where the next enemy salvo will land, you’ll never be able to watch ‘Battle of the River Plate’ in the same light again.
If you’ve never been round it, it would be my choice.

I was thinking about recommending deH Museum but I do not think it opens on a Wednesday: just checked in current Wrecks and Relics. I do recollect turning up there on a Wednesday many moons ago and receiving a personally conducted tour by a volunteer who happened to be working on site.

Never been there on public transport but think it might prove a bit of a “challenge”………..!! Just checked on Transport Direct. It is possible to get there from Hatfield rlywy stn by bus and walking.

Science Museum is possibly the best option… easiest by Tube and you can easily get to Paddington and LHR from there.

BUT aviation hall is pretty dark so pics are a challenge.

IWM is great as well, but remember its half term so loads of kids about in either location.

Hi. I have a few hours to kill in London tomorrow

London is a big place so a reccomendation is very dependent on exactly how much time you will have to spare. IWM Lambeth or the Science Museum are going to be the easiest bets as you are on the tube network and if pushed for time can get to LHR reasonably quickly. London Colney (Mosquito Museum) is definatley worth a visit but is quite a bit further out of town (close the the M25) and there will obviously be more travelling time to get to it.
