Before he died my father told me about a Spitfire which during ww2 was shot down by friendly fire and crashed near the village of Newton near Duxford.. and its still there. The pilot bailed out and parachuted to safety. But what i would like to know is does anyone know the mark and identity of it from accident records etc.?

As an aside a few years ago a farm labourer reluctantly confirmed that the engine and machine guns were still in situ.. makes you wonder if the whole front end was left in the ground. Also as it was supposedly shot down by friendly AA was it a very early Spit that was not recognised as a new type in service.?
