Comet Series 1

I don’t know if this thread should appear here or in Photographic, but is anyone aware of any source of colour photographs of the Comet 1 – black & white are reasonably easy – but colour ……….

Have you tried The Aviation Hobby Shop? Might be a Comet book in their Airlines and Airliners range. I bought the Viscount one a while back and that has a lovely colour shot of an Air France Vicky.

Jon

Thanks Jon, no comet – but two other books I wanted, in the meantime, I came across this neg this evening, closest I can get is Blackbushe 1958.

Cheers Brian.

All though this could go on a couple of other threads, its also applicable to this one.

i just bought off ebay, a model of the Dh museums comet ‘NX looks very similar to one shown earlier in the thread

Will

Does the cutaway model have a manufacturers name or symbol anywhere?

The Mosquito museums example doesnt have a flight deck atm but we are collecting parts to rebuild it. on the indoors subject, we cant tell at this time.

‘NX is the only unmodified example of the mark one fusalage, but the one is Cosford used to be a Mk 1 with Air France. also there is a cockpit section with the Science Museum and one in Canada

Here she is – Miami, August 1974..

So she was still around into the mid ’70s, I wonder what did happen then?
I do like the 01, nose section, looks very complete including U/C.

Has the Mosquito museums example got a complete flight deck? Will it go indoors?

Might be good for someone to post up a list of Comet 1 survivors. I’m assuming ‘NX is the only surviving unmodified fusalage?

Well, it has done its job and the original paint is going back on.

By the time we stripped the front end of the aircraft, there was a lot of corrosion on it. Although the silver paint may not look as good as the Air France scheme, it was providing some real protection to some very fragile skins (in places). The door was especially bad, with a number of corrosion holes.

The intention was to go further, but as usual, life got in the way…!

We did a bit of hasty sprucing up of the registration (which until that point had been covered over with the cocooning – horrible stuff to get off!) and some experimental polishing of the fuselage ahead of the cockpit door (now, sadly, obliterated by the silver paint applied to replicate G-ALVG for the Comet 50th anniversary). When finished the cabin looked quite presentable, there being only a limited amount we could do with money and resources available.

Those were the days!:)

Nice pictures, espec of the polished metal. the oval window in the picture is in the first class area, but there is now an original square one in its place.

still limited resources available as always.

do you have any others of her in those day as ill add them to my collection of her history. the seats have been removed since then.

And 5302…
‘One Comet, number 5302, was sold on 30 July 1965 to a purchaser who hoped to put it in service as a VIP transport, cannibalizing 5301 for parts. The flying Comet became CF-SVR. It was flown to Mount Hope near Hamilton where it sat until January 1968. It was then taken to Florida as N373S for use in charter service. There were too many snags, with the result that 5302 met the nemesis of so many old aircraft – the cutting torch.’

Taken from the above link from Longshot

Here she is – Miami, August 1974 (hot, humid day IIRC!)

Here are a few pictures taken of the Canada Aviation Museum’s example. It has never been restored and is a real time capsule of sorts.

Interesting to see the model and the colours. Have dug out a few of my snaps from 1989/1990. Cheers Brian.
