I chatted to a few fellow forumites at Popham last weekend about several instrument panels salvaged from Mag Elektron back in the 1980s which I have never been able to identify.
They are all quite corroded and damaged in various ways. Erosion of the Magnesium Elektron surface has ensured that any part numbers have long since disappeared.
I have photographed each panel in what seems the most likely orientation.
I think they are all post war, and odds are that they are British. Not sure about civil v. military, though.
The forum has already enabled me to identify panels from a Firefly, Vulcan and Herald (and in each case they have moved on to new homes within the forum) so here’s hoping you can help me out again.:)
Here they are and over to you:-

Please, can you do it without the perspex?
Flybuy, you are correct, here is the link and some excellent pics of the Hermes flight deck http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=55871&highlight=handley+page+hermes+restoration
I wonder if there is room here for a thread dedicated to Cockpit, instrument panels, and yokes etc?
Not like the existing projects one, but more of a record of what they look like.
I tend to use the following web sites
www.airliners.net or www.jetphotos.net
On the drop down field select flightdecks/cockpits and in the free text fields type in which aircraft type you are looking for (for example “Vickers Varsity”). Both sites are good for researching instrument panels and yokes/control wheels of military and Civilan type aircraft.

Enclosed is a picture of the Hastings cockpit at Duxford, hope this helps

Evening everyone, I’m afraid I’ve got to let you all down re-the Hastings instrumentation pictures.
I was over at Newark today but a shortage of volunteers meant that I was asked to act as a guide for a group of Cubs, which in turn meant that I didn’t get enough time to go on to the Hastings, remove all the Perspex covers and photograph the panels.
Sorry!! I’ll try to do it during another visit, when I’ve got more free time.:o

Now you’re trying to get me into trouble and normally I don’t need external assistance! 😮
I’ll see what I can do re the Perspex, which I understand has been installed to minimise ‘damage and theft opportunities!’ Sad to say I know but such a large aircraft is difficult to police by volunteers especially up front where access is a bit restricted and it’s difficult to constantly observe what is happening.

If it helps I might be able to take some new pictures of TG517 on Saturday – WDYT?

I remember somewhere on this forum there are good large colour pics of the Hermes cockpit (Pilots and Navigators stations) taken post restoration at Duxford. I’m sure a quick search on this forum will find these.

Thanks for the suggestion Cees, and the photo of TG517 TwinOtter. There is a rather similar panel on the right hand edge of the pic.
The panel is in rather better shape than the others, having had a good slobber of paint on it. I’ll get the magnifying glass on it again in case there are makers stamps I’ve previously missed.

Thanks AM, thats answers my other question aswel, they would appear to be from Duxfords Hermes!
By: Arabella-Cox - 14th May 2009 at 20:58
Would like to see a pic of that AM.
Here they are.
I cannot recall where I got these pics but they were possibly copied off the net. In which case, I hope the copyright owner will not mind their reproduction in the interests of furthering cockpit knowledge. 🙂

The Victor panel actually looks really early….
Indeed it is.
Hope the new owner can sympathetically restore it.

I had wondered whether the slight difference might make it a Hermes panel but I have a good photo of one and it is altogether different.
Would like to see a pic of that AM.
I think any differences are so small it would indicate different mods to the Hastings panel over the years. The Victor panel actually looks really early.
I was going to ask if anyone knows if the Duxford Hermes has a complete flight deck, or has that gone the way of the fin and rudder?

From the Flight Engineer station on TG517 [pre-Perspex screens – circa 1980s], not sure whether it helps or not?

Just a guess but could the third pic be Hastings too? The Halifax on show at Hendon has a similar thriagular shaped panel in the navigators position and I seem to remember that the Hastings has one as well near the flight engineers postion.
Just a hunch
Cees

Ohh, too much Handley-Page for me to handle!
I can see some differences in fit on the Hastings panel but I assume this makes mine an earlier pattern. And interestingly, I had wondered whether the slight difference might make it a Hermes panel but I have a good photo of one and it is altogether different.
The Victor panel is likely to be going to a new home soon, and the Hastings panel would make an interesting (and challenging) project for someone. The PM system is your friend! 🙂
Thanks JonH, pagen01 and TwinOtter23 for your help so far!
By: pagen01 - 14th May 2009 at 16:01
Cracking pic Jon, I think that pretty well confirms it, thanks.
I will leave the centre panel to some else to ID!
Thanks for the offers TO and still hoping to make it there.
By: TwinOtter23 - 14th May 2009 at 15:50
Nice post-restoration picture Jon; the two I posted were scanned from a 1980s print! 😮
pagen – the Cockpitfest organiser will be disappointed, but if you make it to the event my offer still stands re the Shackleton and Hastings. 😉
By: Jon H - 14th May 2009 at 15:45
Hang on then chaps – let me swap PC’s and post mine…… 😉
Jon
And now from the other machine……
