Ilyushin-18 as hotelsuite….

Someone with too much money has come up with a bright idea again. Next to the flight school that I work at an Ilyushin Il-18 is being assembled, it will be converted into a luxury 2-person hotel suite once completed. This particular airframe has already spent something in the region of 15 years outside as a restaurant. I wonder how long it will last…..

It is registered as DDR-STD and in Interflug colours, a Google search turned up these photos: http://forum.luftfahrtclubbraunschweig.de/andere-flughaefen-f9/diesen-schatz-habe-ich-heute-in-harbke-gefunden-t720.html Apparently the restaurant has been closed for a while.

I can see a new hobby here, staying in aircraft that have been converted into hotels – First there was the Bristol Freighter in New Zealand, then the Boeing 727 in Costa Rica that opened recently, soon there will be the Convair 340 at Carluke in Scotland, and then this IL-18. Are there any more? Oh, I’ve just remembered the Boeing 747 in Sweden.

Someone should have told BA that they could have found an alternative use for the 707, VC-10 and Trident that were scrapped at Cosford…

I found the plans for it, I’m sure it will look great when finished! I am just naturally suspicious of large aeroplanes spending a long time outside I guess, that may be just me of course. 🙂

No worries, Archer, the IL will get a good clean up, new paintscheme and interior,

Just wondered if this was the IL-18 which was listed on Ebay offered for what, to me anyway, seemed like a small fortune a while ago.
Lets hope this gets some TLC as IL-18s seem to be rare birds now.
