Thanks for the clarification, Mark12. In which case I think your remark – third paragraph, about not trying to cheat – is entirely fair, and I applaud the chap for his honesty. Good luck to him – the best way to dispel my cynicism is probably to roar over my head with the engine at full chat, hope he gets that far!

Please accept my grovelling apology for misrepresenting your very descriptive remark.

Thanks Mark, that’s given me a good laugh!

I am, I’m afraid to admit in your company, a bit of a cynic about “data plate” rebuilds (yes, I’ve read your posts and I’m aware that Spitfires didn’t have them, but that seems to be the accepted terminology). So, presumably, someone has less than in ID plate to start with.

A Photo rebuild?:diablo:

No, there is a HAI/6S data plate and the complete top of a frame 5 firewall, courtesy of ebay…and there is a plan in place to build a flying project around it.

What there isn’t is a provenance link to the serial. The serial is the closest that can be estimated using all the known data overlaid on Oakey disposals and assuming everything is sequential.

The owner is not trying to cheat here, he is just placing a stake in the ground before proceeding. He will have a website up shortly on this project where the serial will be clearly identified as provisional.

In the past some have had no regard for historical link and provenance, others are clearly trying to cheat and some may be currently restoring in total blind ignorance of the facts, having been ‘misinformed’ along the sales chain. 🙂

I would consider this a provisional ID.

Neither thin nor robust. 🙂

.
“provisional provenance”, I like the way that rolls off the tongue!

provisional provenance
Definition from the Marrium-Webstar Online Dictionary

Main Entry: pro·vision·al prov·e·nance
Pronunciation: ˈprä-viz-an-al’, ˈprä-vÉ™-ËŒnän(t)s
Function: adjectival noun
Etymology: French, temporary – from provenir to come forth, originate, from Latin provenire, from pro- forth + venire to come — more at pro-, come
Date: 2009
1 : initial guess of origin, source
2 : temporary history of ownership of a valued object or work of art or literature
3: The identity of a recreated spitfire as determined by the most interesting paintscheme to be applied, and temporary, subject to the creation of a new dataplate or adoption of another more interesting paintscheme, and matching new dataplate.

A new category of provenance: “thick but flimsy”?

I prefer:- “Broken and Chancy”. 🙂
