Weight of the paint job ?

What would it take for an old military jet to be painted ?

Consider all dents and scratches have to filled and smoothed..primer, paint and lacquer all together ?

100 lbs

200 lbs

300 lbs

?

Let’s say for a Fouga Magister of the sixties ?

I was once told that a 747 paint job weighed in at 400Lbs. Don’t know how correct that is though!

If you ever get the chance to see an aircraft painted, just look at the number of 5 litre paint tins that have been used, then imagine trying to carry all of them when they are full of paint!
Paint can be suprisingly heavy, especially when you consider primer then top coat.

Gentlemen !

Thanks for the input. I’ll figure out what the 35 sq meter winged Fouga Magister IV paint should weight using the Buccaneer paints.

1 sq yard is 0.836127360 m2

The wing should have been only 3.5 kilos and fuse possibly just 2 kilos. Whoever offered the paint job apparently had no glue about it on aeroplanes. That Fouga was in civilian register.

Here is data that says 40-50 lbs to an aeroplane. http://www.airbum.com/articles/ArticlePaint.html

I think it’s more of an issue if you apply paint over the top of an existing scheme, if you go back to bare metal or close to then re-apply the surface finish it can make a surprising difference to the tare weight.

Hello Fouga 23,

It was long a go when a friend of mine a test pilot refused the paint job of his flown old FAF Fouga Magister CM 170. He said he was told it will weight more or less 100 kg altogether.

Some people have found this estimate grossly exaggerated. He is a lightweigh person and flew it alone in air shows…does this matter ( will there be excess weight in the tail ) ?

I don’t think it matters that much. Yes, it adds weight, but if done correctly it shouldn’t be much. I assume it was a Fouga with Marboré VI engines? more then enough power to handle a little paint 🙂
If you fill all the dents, screws,… and keep a smooth paint finish it can even be good for your airspeed!

These are figures I have for the Buccaneer.

Primer: One, double-track coat, 0.75 to 1.0ozs/sq yd.

Polyurethane Finish: Two, single-track coats at 18 to 25deg C, 1.5 to 2.0oz/sq yd.

Indentification Colours: Should be sprayed on top of finish to give a film weight of 1.0 to 1.5oz/sq yd.

Hope this is of some help.
