My father flew 51 ops as a Flight Engineer between May1943 and February 1945 with 12 and 463 squadrons, raids included Peenemunde, Turin, Milan and Berlin.(http://www.raf-bombercommand.co.uk)
His second tour was with an Australian crew all whom were awarded DFC’s. Yet my father never received any award can anybody tell me under what criteria these awards were made.

DFC awards
Jim
All the were commisioned officers in fact I believe that dad got his commission on the recomendation of Bil Radford as he believed the whole crew should be treated as equal.
Some of the DFCs were awarded on the crews return to Austrailia.
Proud is an understatement.

Hi Andy,
I’ve always understood it to be basically at the whim of the C/O. I believe there were guidelines, but it was his decision.
Was he the only one granted a commission? Were all the awards made at the same time? Have you tried the Australian Archive to see if the papers of the other gentlemen are available, it may have a copy of the citation?
Interesting story, you must be very proud of him.
