Taken at Church Fenton many years ago

Nice one Brian! I remember witnessing a similar (if not the same) display at the much missed SSAFA show – freeloading work colleagues of mine who opted to watch the show from outside the airfield were going to put in an official complaint as, in their own words, ‘…it nearly took our heffing heads off!’

I have another shot from ground level which shows other aircrew casually strolling back from the flightline looking to their right to see this coming right at them….. brilliant stuff – never to be seen again me thinks :diablo:

Where is that pic then young Pete ?? We need to see it 😀

not on the Lightning you can’t. You can overide the gear selector switch, by pushing a pin in with a screw driver, but the gear will then retract as soon as you have hydraulic pressure on engine start up. Frightnings have a pressure speed switch in the nose gear bay that physically locks the gear selector out until you reach about 180Knts. once you exceed 220ish knts the gear goes up on its own.

Confused !!! you are sir 😀 the reference to post number 2 was the clue 😀
I was talking about Buccs – if you look at the bottom of the Lightning pic that ended up in the quote…the text was about buccs…I didnt expect the pic to appear as well… sorry for any confusion 😀

cheers baz

It’s ok Ken, I well remember the Su-27 arrival at Boscombe in 91(?) where its flypast seemed lower that than the TU-134 which was on its landing roll!

That was Anatoly Kvochur again……. (poor photo attached)…

IIRC, he had just flown non-stop from Moscow (or had he overnighted in Jersey??).

He flew alongside the Tu-134, climbed, did an impromptu display and then landed.

I think he got a bo**ocking from the safety committee.

I got his autograph later on as he was being driven past…..

That’s what all the pundits said at the time – that it was Photoshopped…..

Actually as P in post 2 said you could preselect gear up on the ground

Thanks pagey,I wish I knew who took it/flew it but too long ago,I keep thinking it was taken from a light tower but it may have been from a ‘giraffe’- single seat Hunters were always photogenic 😀

It was a ‘giraffe’ Baz. I was discussing this with another of us ex-Brawdy lot recently actually… I was over on VASF pan at the time, and saw it come past at an alarming low level bearing in mind the uneven terrain from that side of the airfield… There was talk about the pilot leaving (me thinks instructor then), and it was pre-arranged to have to station photographer up on the ‘giraffe’ steps for good effect… Don’t think it was expected to be quite that low though, especially as there are 3 hangars out of shot but very close and he was heading straight at them 😮 That photo is caught just as he banked away and pulled up sharply to clear them…. which probably wasn’t what the photographer was expecting…. 😀

I’m not suggesting that is fake, but there is no impression of speed and it seems to at the same height as if on its undercarriage in that picture!

There’s another photo taken from the other side :- http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=1027487&size=L&width=1152&height=780&sok=&photo_nr=21

…..and there is video of it somewhere…..

Anatoly Kvochur is a master at low flying……
…and no, it isn’t a fake.
Ken

Fairly common ‘trick’ with the Bucc. I went to a talk by a Buccaneer pilot who explained that it was partly helped by the fact that it has a T tail which gives some wing in ground effect (same as Victor), and that it was designed to be taken off with hands away from the controls, and tailplane pre selected at the right incidence angle-both from its FAA days.

I have seen Lightnings doing quick gear up departures, but never saw them stay on the deck like the Bucc. But then, I never saw a Buccaneer go vertical like the Lightning!

I have heard it went wrong at least once, anyone confirm?

And the Lightning lads……:D

As for Bucc’s, I seem to rememember reading somewhere that the tongue-in-cheek take-off proceedure was lift-off was done by pulling the gear handle at take-off speed……:)

Yeah the Jaguar boys liked to play the same game.

And the Lightning lads……(admittidly this was actually a fly-by, rather than take-off/landing) 😀
But, it has been recorded where Lightnings did on oaccasion sink back onto their ventral tanks during such take-off’s…. 😀

This pairs take-off shows pretty quick gear pulling on the Lightning
