The previous excellent thread on items losing their history and adopting other history provokes me to try and sort out a problem with a lovely item in my collection.
The photos show an early Spitfire external armoured screen from a Battle of Britain site….it has been labelled R6832, 54 Sqn, shot down 27th Aug…Al Deere’s aircraft…BUT, reference to the wonderful Battle of Britain book shows that KBoBM has a windscreen frame from this aircraft/crash and a photo of it….so what do I have? Does any long established digger recognise it? PLEASE?! I hate it when a lovely item loses its history….such a pity.

Oh dear!
If I tell you 500% that this is NOT the item I suggested it to be would you desist from your desire to have my babies?
Seriously, there is no doubt that this is it. Slightly sad that I have a photographic memory for things like this. Even sadder that there are those who will change histories on items because of their perception that a different history will be “sexier” and increase its value. I am pretty sure that I know the route of this item, and it certainly changed hands with its provenance fully known and recorded. A certain known repeat offender is the culprit here.

History no longer lost, Rocketeer…..!
I am sure (bottom centre) is the frame you have?
Certainly Ted Smith-Hall’s 129 Squadron Spitfire V from 5/5/1942.

Tony
It looks kind of familiar…..
Let me dig out my photos.
Something niggles at the back of my brain….129 Squadron, 5/5/42. Cannot recall the serial no, or if it was even externally screened, but it was a Mk V. The pilot was Fg Off Ted Hall, RAAF, who baled out at Wilmington, East Sussex. Sad that I remember all that!!
A windscreen frame that looks remarkably like that did trun up, but no idea where it is now. Unless you have it!
