What tailwheels are these?

My friend has a trolley in his yard which appears to be made out of two
aircraft tailwheels. They were originally used for transporting iron girders around an engineering firm.
The tyre is 11 inch diameter and has the following codes on:- 4.95-3.5 WM14 AM[air ministry?] 30517 MO56 7E.
The Hub is 4.5 inches diameter and has the following codes on :- A836 AL/287 ETV20 23523.
Any ideas?

regards Graham

Tyre diameter needs to be about 18″

Correction………
The 18″ tyre is the later twin contact type, the earlier `balloon tyres are 21″ diameter, the hub in both cases is @ 7.5 ” tyre size for twin contact tyre is 10.oo- 5.25

Think you should be looking at Air Ministry` suggestions..much nearer the mark..yes a Dunlop AH prefix would nail it !!

Hi Cees,

We have 2 wheels both different sizes, I think I know which one is Stirling, so in other words we need one at least:o

Seriously though, roughly where are/were they located as this may help to determine from which scrapyard/aircraft they were recovered from

John

I would have to more research, the info is available, my gut feeling is that because there are two maybe they were spares that were slid off a shelf.
I cant see anybody going to the trouble of retreiving them from two aircraft?

Regards

Graham

I’m not sure there is enough info to identify the wheel – try looking for a Dunlop Drawing Number, usually prefixed AHO, or a Palmer Drawing Number.

The tyres could have been used on the tailwheel of any of the following:-

Anson, Albemarle (awaits silly comment), Battle, Fulmar, Hurricane, Swordfish, Hurricane, Lysander, Oxford, Defiant.

More info about the wheel would help narrow the list.
