RAAF Vultee A-35 Vengeance Colour Information

I am refurbishing this 1/6 scale R/C Vultee Vengeance model that I built back in 2001, and which was damged slightly in 2006. It was originally finished in US 8th Air Force markings as a target towing aircraft.

I am now looking to re-finish the aircraft in RAAF markings flying out of New Guinea. The colour photos I have ( in the book Vengeance by Peter C. Smith ) show various shades of green and brown, some suggesting the green being olive drab, but colour photos are a very unreliable source for colour reference. With the aircraft being manufactured in the USA, I wondered if Vultee were given specific colour chips to work to or whether they were told to use “green, brown and grey or sky”.

Several written sources state RAF Vengeances as being painted Dark Green, Dark Earth and Medium Sea Grey, and RAAF Vengeances being Foliage Green, Dark Earth and Sky.

Does anyone have any more information about RAAF colour schemes? Were aircraft used in the factory finish with only National Insignia added, or re-finished ‘in the field’ into particular theatre camouflage?

Any help would be appreciated.

Steve

…has anyone info of the current state of A27-247. My last info is that it is awaiting restoration with Precision Aerospace, Wangaratta (Victoria).

That would be correct. While my info is about a year or so old, I have no reason to believe the Vengeance has got into the work-queue at the moment.

It is essentially a fuselage hulk, with numerous small and some larger parts, including wing sections. The ‘Vultee’ rudder pedals are cool. Given Precision’s equipment and expertise, I’m sure a rebuild is viable, but it’ll be a while yet!

HTH,

(PS – Got the e-mail – nice.)

Vengeance Survivors

Hi,

While the present state of A27-99 is well documented, has anyone info of the current state of A27-247. My last info is that it is awaiting restoration with Precision Aerospace, Wangaratta (Victoria).

Any further info would be appreciated.

I have a book (unpublished) written by Jim Bigelow canned “From where it all began” – a collection of “memories and Experiences” relating to ex-members of 12 SQN RAAF 1939 – 1945

You guessed it, they flew Hawker Demons, Avro Ansens, Wirraways, Vultee Vengeances and B24 Liberators.

Its about 25cm thick and has lots of interesting stories about flying the Vengeance. The contributors to the book are from members of the squadron back then and cover all the musterings.

One article tells of handing over a gaggle of Vengeances in Kalgoorlie, WA and the aircraft remained there until the end of the war when they were sold complete for 6 pound each

Great Book, shame it will never be published.

cheers

I can’t remember what drawings I used. It was a combination of stuff I found on the net, photographs and the Vengeance book by Peter C Smith. The model isn’t 100% accurate because of the lack of good information, and an aircraft I could measure. It was designed for airshow flying rather than competition use, and so I could live with slight inaccuracies.

The engine cowling for example was from the same mould as my 1/6 scale P-47N. It was cut along the bottom centre line, widened to make it more oval, cowl gills modified and intakes added. The small doors that enclose the legs were left off for simplicity, although the wheel door with the torque link passing through was fitted as I felt it was a part of the character of the aircraft. The tail wheel was also non-retracting due to lack of space in the tail due to the structure needed to make the tail and fin removable.

Where possible, I try and limit the amount I deviate from scale.

if you what to see a copy of the front end drawings give me a shout, sorry but it will only be the front end, to see the rest you will have to wait for the book.

Managed to bag a good selection of scheme photos and a couple featuring the gun.

Steve, let me have your mailing address and I’ll pop them on a CD.

One thing I am still looking for is details of the construction for the single .50 cal gun ring in the rear cockpit. Don’t suppose anyone has any pictures of this?

I’ll check the files at the RAAFM Archive next week.

Thanks to everyone who’s posted or emailed me information. With the information here and the colour chips from Ian K Baker’s Aviation History Colouring Book, I should be able to mix up a good colour match.

So far after lots of rubbing down, filling and priming, the fuselage, tail and centre wing section are looking pretty good and almost ready for surface detailing. The outer wings and cowl haven’t yet been started, and I also need to make a new canopy and tailwheel leg.

RAAF Colour Chart

Found this somewhere on the web (sorry, been some time on my HD, can’t remember where it came from).

Spartan colour chart, a bit faded but a good start where RAAF colours are concerned.
