Auster WZ706 G-BURR

Does anybody have any information or photographs on Auster AOP WZ706 now G-BURR?

I’m trying to find some information on the aircrafts history for the new owner especially when the aircraft served with the Army Air Corps.

Any information much appreciated.

Details of two incidents involving WZ706 in the Far East can be seen via the links given in my earlier post. As far as I am aware no further major incident happened involving the aircraft after the Thailand recovery.

It would appear that TW706 made a second forced landing after returning to the skies with the Army Air Corp after her recovery from Thailand in 1960

Does anybody have any information on this second incident?

Auster WZ706 G-BURR

Sorry

slip of the typing finger? The aircraft is at Eggesford and not Egglescote/Eaglescott.

The owner says he would like to have her flying again in June for the Army air day at Middle Wallop and 656sqn reunion but these things take time.

A slip of the typing finger? The photo looks to have been taken in the hangar at Eggesford not Egglescote/Eaglescott.

Definately not Eaglescott 🙂

Photo was taken in the main hangar at Eggesford.

Auster WZ706 update 9th March 2009

I have spoken to the new owner today about Auster WZ706.

Just before Christmas 2008 this aircraft was moved by road from Middle Wallop to Egglescote in Devon and is now being restored back to it’s flying condition.

The owner hopes WZ706 will be flying again this summer and she will remain in her Army Air Corps scheme and will wear the 656 Squadrons crest.

WZ706 will then move North to be based closer the new owner who currently lives in Derbyshire, the airfield location not yet confirmed.

It is hoped that any persons who have had connections with this aircraft may get the chance to be reunited with it once again in the near future.

So please watch this space and i’ll update this page when I know when she will take to the skies once again.

Oh great…still an ‘Army Air Corp’ plane and looking really good.
That’s fitting, since she has such a history, I had thought she was going to be a ‘civvie’!
Where’s she going to be flying from?

AUSTER MK 9 RECOVERY IN THAILAND 1960

Thanks for the information so far.

The 656 Sqn records show it had a colourful history.

AUSTER MK9 WZ 706 WAS RECOVERY IN THAILAND 1960

A recovery team drawn from 656 Light Aircraft Squadron workshops took part in a most interesting and instructive venture to Thailand to recover by air and road an Auster MK9 aircraft that had made an exceptionally good landing on a newly laid track beside paddy fields.

This type of operation was a new venture, as indeed it was for us, so the Sycamore squadron commander and his senior technical officer plus our squadron Commander, Lt.Colonel Creswell, OBE, and 2 i/c Major Pritchard—Davies arrived to watch and suggest ideas on the most practical way of doing this “Sky—recovery”.

Major Storey, ASM Penlold, S/Sgt Boam, Sgt.McLeod, Cpls. Frost—Bridges, Burns, Davison, Pickhaver, Walker, L/Cpl. Corbett, and Pte. Barker the driver

If anybody knows of the last know were about of the following people it would be appreciated

WZ706 is also the subject in the David Shepherd painting of the Auster in Malaya!

despite all that WZ706 made it back to the UK to become an instructional airframe.
