As per the latest trends, time for a Folland Gnat thread i think.

To start of, i’ll start at the beginning with the Midge…..

One of my first memories was of the reds attending an airshow at Coventry. One of the synchro pair turned right above our garage – it was bloody low, and seemed to a nine year old almost close enough to touch. It was downhill all the way from there. I guess that would be about 1976.

Thanks for the nostalgia, folks – I just remember the “Reds” with Gnats, still think they are an incredibly pretty aeroplane.

It’s easy to forget how tiny they are – in that landing pic, you almost expect to see the pilots legs instead of the nosewheel, he’s so big in relation to his mount.

Nice photo’s HP81, thanks for sharing.

Which is the raison d’être for this and similiar threads. Hope you don’t get stoned against a wall as a result 😮

The Midge was a pale blue with red codes, and my guess at the others would be XK739, XK740 and XK741.

I have very few non transport aircraft photos in my collection, but these three were passed to me following the death of my Fathers uncle. He apparently worked as a security guard for Folland, almost certainly at Chilbolton. On the back of the first photograph it says ‘Gnat prototype No 2 (Bristol Engine)’. On the formation shot it says ‘Part of Sqdn for export’. I assume from the previous posts that these aircraft remained in the UK. What colour was the prototype?

Thanks Keith,

The F.1 is the (earlier) single-seat fighter version – the upper photo, so Leuchars, 1961. Was just wondering if it’s identity could be seen/worked out.

I was involved with acquiring and moving F.1 XK741 (shown in post 6) from Wolverhampton to MAM (many moons ago).

Roger,

Sorry being ‘non tech’ I dont know which is an F1 ???

Both photos are from Leuchars Air Shows.

The upper one is from 1961.

The lower one is from 1968.

Sorry can’t be of any more help !

Keith.

Re Post No 6
Top photo
Looks a bit reminiscent to the back of the main production Hangar/boiler room at Dunsfold, not much to go on but they did fly Gnats from there ??!!
And that looks like a Hunter rear fuselage trolley lurking in background – circumstantial i know 😉

Cheers baz
