Ok here is another hypothetical scenario. Suppose I was lucky to win the lottery (more chance of the Med drying I know:rolleyes:) but roughly how much would it cost to build a non-airwothy Mk 1a Spitfire replica from scratch?
Bearing in mind most of the frames & skins do not need to be of aircraft quality, the engine a non runner & other components without paperwork to reduce the costs.

I still have an unfinished Spit cockpit section up for grabs – looking at Tonys breakdown it must be worth a fortune!
Anyone interested? It would be nice if it could go to a good home.
Proceeds will go towards getting a the plexiglass blown for our front turret.
Any piccies??

During a recent visit to Norfolk & Suffolk Museum at Flixton I saw the FSM of a Spit made for the BoB film.
It’s worth conserving because of its past…in addition to what it represents.

Well, as most of the work is in the labour, NOT materials, about the same.
Bruce
Hello Bruce, so a static Spitire around £1m? OUCH! No wonder there aren’t that many original Spitfires on display in museums (apart from the main national or a few regionals).
Then again, if I had a £1m, I’d rather spent it on a number of airworthy replicas (DH4A, Avro 504N, Miles M1 Saytr, Westland-Hill Pterodactyl, etc).
Must stop having these silly day-dreams.

From being a replica to something more…
…real?
We know that Spitfire TR MKIX G-ILDA (apparently converted from a Mk1 : snigger) will go for around £1.5m, how much for a real static example, built by the same people? Less paperwork and non-airworthy parts should reduce the costs considerably? And how much for a Hurricane (same specs.)?

On the subject of replica Spitfires, I thought this was interesting…

just noticed in todays daily mail a retired doctor in Moffat has a replica spitfire in his front lawn (must be great trying to get a lawn mower around!):D
Its painted up as PT462 as the good Doctor had a flight in the orginal in Florida. Of course the replica is a single seater unlike the one he flew. Its only just arrived so the scottish grass hasn’t started to grow yet.
He “constructed” it with help from a few friends. What a pity James May wasnt a friend of his and they could have filmed it for the BBC

Graham, Don’t forget to take photos and upload them for us mere mortals to see.
Will get around to it soon, planning on running her again next weekend, was going to have a crack today but its freezing (North wind) Would like to see some pictures of how they had that motor set up to spin the prop. I dont get much vibration the meteors very smooth of coarse havent got a prop attached yet.

As I mentioned before, in the Netherlands we do not have a full size original Fokker G1 left , although there are plans underway to reconstruct one but first the drawings will have to be reconstructed in a similar fashion as the Stirling Project.
We have a FSM on show at Soesterberg which was made by a furniture factory during 1985 and it looks great with even the engines looking very real although they are fake, but very detailed. Here are some pics by Michiel Mans
Cheers

Totally agree with you, Graham
Absolutely! 😀
I put a lot of time, effort and money on mine and have never regretted any of it. The advantage of a replica over the real thing is that the replica can be left outside 24/7 and can also be made (more)weather proof. If you lose it to the elements (Storm force winds etc) it can be replaced more easily.
It satisfies 99 percent of the population when they see it and as it is not stuffed in a hangar all year, more people get to appreciate it.
With a replica you can do as much (or little) as you wish, add a working engine, cockpit, lights, removeable panels etc, etcI get up to 1000 people a day in the summer ( usually coaches ) stopping for a look, so if you buy one, expect everyone to inspect it. Don’t be put off by the anti-fibreglass brigade as a good one will fool them too.
Radpoe Meteor if you want any help, contact me on my website (details below)
Looks Awesome, why dont you fit an engine its even more fun to play with.:diablo: Incidentally just fixed the legs on mine so running it this weekend, can roll it outside now so should be longer than 30 secs this time.

Years ago I chatted to a chap from the RAF renenactors at Biggin Hill, he said he has a replica that he built himself with original instruments. Keeps it at an AF near Wales. Any ideas?
