I found a great source for public domain NASA and USAF experimental projects images.
Here are a few X-1 pictures. The website have these pictures in LARGE format, so if anyone wants a cool picture on the wall – just do it!

Another X-1 and another mothership.

Either right-stuffers, or a couple of local farmers – not sure :p

Yes, the X-1A had a conventional windscreen/hood. The mach buster (with the sloped bullet style windscreen) was simply called X-1 (originally XS-1).
Lets hope the taped up wires are related to ground test, or even the photo session :p

1947 – the year I was born, seems so long ago.
ditto 🙂
“2nd batch, photo 1 “Joe Walker….” is that an X-1A? it’s got a conventional windscreen (and hood?) and the bit of wire/cable taped on the side going into the cockpit can’t have helped the aerodynamics
Great photos – thanks for bringing our attention to them.

I still believe George Welch beat yeager in the XF-86!
Its possible, but without the “mach jump” paper, there is no actual proof. It will remain an anecdote.

Another batch…
Fill her up….

Bridled and saddled…

Workstation.

Proof they did it…note that “Glamorous Glennis” seems to have been removed. If indeed the picture is from the same flight as the “mach jump” paper.
