Does anyone know what landing gear installation NX611 has? Lincoln, Lancaster, linc/lancaster mix, Shackelton??

Sir Leonard to you! Otherwise known as ‘Len the Plough’ after that episode. Thank goodness we had the half-track to drag it out.

SURE BRINGS THE MEMORIES FLOODING BACK DOESN’T IT ALAN !!! Great Shot – looks like one of Martin’s on that fateful day at Lavenham (19th April 1969).
Here’s a shot (not very good I’m afraid – taken off the 8mm cine film I took on the occasion) of NX611 as she was about to be towed back on to the peri-track by our old workhorse, the half-track. “Len the Plough” is just to the left of the half-track as he ran round to take a concerned look at his attempt at ploughing up farmer Alston’s field.
Good to see you again at the 2005 re-union Alan – even though I had a hard job at first recognising you without your old bobblehat !!!
Good times (mostly) eh !!

There are two good photo’s of 57 and 630 Squadron Lancs showing the painted tailfins on page 112 of ‘Lancaster At War 2’, one in the background is marked LE-C. By the way did any of the 50 or so B1 (BV11 Interim) Lancs with the Frazer-Nash mid upper turret moved forward that were built before NX611 and all the other BV11’s serve with 57 or 630 at East Kirkby?

Paint the fins NX she’s a late model Lanc so it would fit in nicely also it would be educational as how many people know the significance of such markings.:)

I think this shows a bit of the strength of the Lanc undercarriage- when Leonard Cheshire taxied it at Lavenham. Thank you Mr Cheshire!

What happened to the plan to get it flying again?
By: pagen01 - 19th February 2009 at 11:09
Not really, and wouldn’t help anyway as silver post-war Mk.10 Canadian Lancs.

Dont know if you can see the undercarriage on these?
By: pagen01 - 18th February 2009 at 21:37
Alot of the wartime Lanc pics show them with completely black painted U/Cs (apart from the oleos of course), but even the pics you show are predominantly black with silver detail. NX611 seems just right.
The Coastal Lancs definatley were painted in the airframe colour of dark blue (French) white, or extra dark sea grey.

We’ve also thought about painting the tail fins in the proper 57 and 630 sqn (Squadrons based at East Kirkby) marking- Red with a horizontal black line and red with a verticle black line.
What does anyone think?
Get the brush out. If you paint the fins it will make everybody’s photos out of date. Therefore, they will have to return to get new ones. You’ll be quids in. 😀
Best wishes

Your right there NX, sad day for Canada when it left her home for good! Even sadder when she was damaged in the UK and was seperated into bits before leaving for florida!

I think Stevie P’s photo is about the closest we’ll get to KB976 for quite some time which is a great pity!

Apologies NX drooling all over the picture of Steves of 976! Any mroe steve can we put them onto a new thread if you have a few??
NX611, I would think that painting the tailfins would not be historically correct to the airframe but for what she represents they would look fantastic!!

You’re right.
I’ve never paid that much attention to the undercarriage on wartime photos!
It something we’ll consider.

wartime the gear was painted silver with black bands 3/4 the way up
By: pagen01 - 18th February 2009 at 19:19
I always thought that Lancaster undercarriages were painted in the main colour of the aircraft, ie Bombers black, MRs white or grey, and PRs etc silver.

Looks like ours have always been black-
This is right back from the 50’s when it was serving out around Morocco.
I think this shows a bit of the strength of the Lanc undercarriage- when Leonard Cheshire taxied it at Lavenham. Thank you Mr Cheshire!
