The Van Nuys Sea Prince..

.. has been *rescued*. The judge gave it away on condition it was removed from the field & a mate of mine who works for the FAA grabbed it. It will now be dismantled & moved out to the desert… Not sure what the plan is after that.
It’s already been moved across the field to PR’s hangar & I’ll be digging out my Whitworths in the morning…
It’s been parked so long the engine cowls contain bird nests made from SS safety wire… (or at least they did last time I looked at it)

Pics to follow 🙂

Glad to see it’s still around. I saw it parked in 1977-78 at Van Nuys…..even then it looked like it hadn’t flown in ages.

There is another Prince/Sea Prince away from an airport in California. I saw a mention of it in a car magazine years ago. Some racer/car builder had it at his ranch.

Would love to contact owners. My Dad flew G-ALWH at Biggin Hill for Decca for many years. I also did many hours in her as a passenger . Would be great to visit and see her again.

Well that is a strange coincidence, passed by this very aircraft last month, still in the back yard of a property at Antelope Acres. We found the location on Google earth and plotted the route from Fox Field. The aircraft and several others are easily seen over the fence and as time was limited we did not feel the need to ask to enter and get closer photos. Sorry if the owner is watching and feels offended.

Paul

The WWII US Army Ford G8T truck that you would have also seen is mine.

Latest news is that it’s (probably) about to get an ADF antenna as I just finished making it look presentable. At least that was the plan, when the owner saw how nice it looks now he said it may go on the mantle instead.

On the logbook front: The story/rumor is that there are logs etc, but they were never forthcoming from the previous owner (who has since died) & his daughter thinks they “might be around someplace”. I forwarded the email I got about the logs to the current owner.

Just wondering if there is any news on the rebuild of the Prince?

Also if ZRX61 is still on this site could he get in touch as I would like to ask him if he has access to the aircrafts log book of G-ALWH from it’s days with Sperry Gyroscope.

Thanks for the pictures!
She still looks in fairly good condition. Any idea where she is heading?

and just prior to export she had a modified scheme but you can still see the match up to the Decca text that you’ve revealed again on the airframe

Wonderful news that the old girl has been taken into care rather than ending up being scrapped. Forty years ago she looked like this:
http://www.airlinefan.com/airline-photos/1483127/Decca-Navigator-Company-Ltd./Percival/Prince-Mk.1/G-ALWH/

and just prior to export she had a modified scheme but you can still see the match up to the Decca text that you’ve revealed again on the airframe:
