Spitfire PR XIX blue – RAL No.

Evening chaps,

One of my friends is building one of the Australian Spitfire homebuilts and fancies a PR Blue ‘hue’ to it.

Is their an international colour reference (RAL No.) available for the current modern incarnation as used on PS853 and PM631?

I understand that the history of PR colours is clouded in some mystery and home brews, however the modern shade is fine for his purposes.

Thanks if you can help

actually, the colour of PS853 is wrong. its not a true PR blue. PM631 is nearer although I think they used Landrover Blue for that 1 because PR blue is hard to come by. the last aircraft to carry PR Blue were the PR9 Canberras

THe colour of PS853 is indeed incorrect. I spoke to the guy who looked after her at East Midlands a few years ago and he said that they had tried hard to find out what colour had been used for her when she was restored without any joy.

The incorrectness of the colour is more obvious when you see the original blue which is visible in certain areas when various panels etc are removed.

Despite the wrong colour she still looks rather nice though dont she?

Andy

perhaps to make up your mind G-BBJI Isaacs Spitfire replica was/is in PR blue, just to give you some idea.
Is this a project in the UK ??

Yes it is, my colleagues project is in Aberdeenshire.

He has his mind made up already, just wanted an confirmation on a colour number.

It’s still in the appropriate British Standard (BS381C) as colour 636 PRU Blue

An interesting aspect of the colour is that the’6**’ range is now used for greys.

Would certainly make a nice change to the usual standard camo finish.

(I know it’s the owner’s choice as to what he paints on his airframe, but there are some that are just… wrong!)

AndyG, interesting slant on a colour scheme for a homebuild Spitfire as most are standard camo., what country are you in ? how far advanced is the build and any pictures ??

There is not too much mystery to the blue PR shades, although they did fade a lot in service. Not got a RAL reference to hand but closest match is 35189 from the FS595B range. he should be able to get that mixed locally as its a fairly ‘international’ standard.
