Hello everyone, first post on this forum, I was directed here by a friend at ARC who thought you folks might be able to help out with a question.
I was given a Compass some time ago, which I was told came out of a Hurricane. I didn’t give it much thought, but recently I have been contemplating selling it as it is taking up space, so I would like to know a bit more.
The Compass I have is marked “AM REF 6A/726” which to my mind makes it wrong for a Hurricane, did they not have P8 Compasses?
Does anyone know a POSSIBLE source aircraft type for this compass?
Its not in perfect condition and is missing the fluid which was originally in there, but other than that, its pretty reasonable, so would it have any particular value to a collector?
I apologise for the barrage of questions.
Cheers
Matt

P8/P11 compass – quire valuable here in Australia, every Tiger Moth has two and with the increasing numbers of Tiger Moths coming back on the register, that is causing a problem.
I know that for a P8/P11 I would be happy to pay A$500 or maybe more for one in good condition (suitable for overhaul).
cheers

The alpha numeric “6A” is the RAF Stores “Section” of the Vocabulary of RAF Equipment and 726 is its individual reference number in that catalogue. As I understand it 6A/726 was the reference number allocated to the Pilots Type Magnetic Compass Type P8.
And yes I would think it would have value to a collector, though if you like you could give it to me!
Thanks for that, so it could have come from any aircraft using the P8 compass. Difficult to trace a particular type I would imagine. I would love to give it away, but I am pretty strapped for cash at the moment, so if I can get a bit of cash for it and have it go somewhere where it is wanted, I will be more than happy.
I don’t have a clue what to expect for it though, there must be hundreds of them in circulation and probably in far better condition!
