No.1 Squadron team members in Canada, 1934

I read somewhere that No.1 Squadron took its Hawker Furys to Canada in June/July 1934 to take part in the Canadian Centennial Celebrations at Toronto. It was reported that the members of the squadron team were “Flt Lt Russell-Stracey, Fg Offs Chatterton, Donaldson and Dixon”. Fg Off Donaldson was thought to be Fg Off E M ‘Teddy’ Donaldson. However, “RAF Top Gun” – his biography, which was published last year fails to mention his trip to Canada and states that he was on 3 Squadron at the time! Can any member please confirm the identity of “Fg Off Donaldson”?

A good idea but not sure how I go about starting up a dedicated thread.

Welcome!

Click: http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=4
which takes you to the main Historic Aviation forum, and you’ll see a ‘New Thread’ button at the top left just under the banner.

Type away (not forgetting a thread title in the upper bar) and off you go!

Cheers,

No.1 Squadron team members in Canada, 1934
I can’t give you any information on Donaldson, but Foster Hickman Dixon was my father. I have a copy of the certificate of the Freedom of the City of Toronto given to each member of the team.
My father went on to be Chief test piolt for Fairy Aviation and was killed in 1949 whilst testing the Gyrodyne. If anyone has any more information about his early flying career I would be interested.

Prudence – welcome to the Forum.

You might do well to start a new, dedicated thread on your father – it may attract members/viewers who may have bi-passed this thread. If you are a complete newcomer then expect what is known as “thread drift” (posts going off at a tangent) but I’m sure you’ll get a better response.

Roger Smith.

I think somewhere in my Vintage Aviation photo Collection I have a picture of one of the a/c taken at the Hamilton Airport in Ontario Canada.
I will try to scan it and post it here. If not able to I will send it to one of you and you can try to post it for me.

My details come from the RAF List for May 1935.

This primary document lists each squadron and the officers assigned to it.

Hence the confirmation of who was with the squadron, the full christian names, and in the case of Donaldson when he was assigned to the squadron.

In his book ‘Number One in War and Peace’ Norman Franks mentions that the team member in question was F/O E.M. Donaldson, i.e. ‘Teddy’ Donaldson (later Air Commodore). Can we confirm that this is not correct?

According to Alex Crawford’s book, it was Flying Officer J W Donaldson.
