I was thinking at work, up on the ladder waiting for the thatch to unfreeze!
I have never seen anything in books about Tiger Moths towing banners. I remember in the early 1960’s seeing them over Dunstable. In those days my school friends all thought they where first world war aircraft, but then we where only 6 or 7. But i knew a bit more than them. Can anyboby else remember them towing banners. I would think the ones i saw came from the London Gliding Club. Did they pick the banners up after take off or did they roll them out once in the air as Avro 504n’s did?

Came upon this thread a bit late but I well remember going to a Fulham home game in the late 1950s/early 1960s.
I have no idea of the score or even who they played but recall seeing Vendair’s Tiger Moth G-APIP doing several circuits of their Craven Cottage ground towing a banner saying ‘Dogs eat Melox Kruckles’.
Maybe they did, or maybe it was spelt Cruckles, but anyway I can’t find any reference to them on the internet.
The more regularly seen banner tower of those days, or at least along the south coast was the ‘Lamtex Rugs’ Prentice G-AOKH.

Not banner towing, but some lovely and previously “unseen” shots of the Sea Tiger!
Any use for your book?

In answer to GASEA’s original question, I guess that it was a case of someone earning a bit of extra money from Dunstable’s gliding tugs!
If anyone has any pictures of banner-towing, or glider-tug Tigers in use, please drop me a line. I’m looking for a good shot or two for a forthcoming book!

I have and still do banner tow with the Tiger (not very often though). We do as mentioned with the banner laid out in front of the aircraft at a slight angle.

I don’t think they would have had the roller gear as this seems to be perculiar to some of the 16 504Ns used by the four companies engaged in aerial advertising
I thought Austers, Cubs and Tigers used the system whereby the cable and banner are coupled to a glider towing hook and laid out in front and alongside of the aircraft so the drag is gradual and allows the aircraft to accelerate.
