Searching for rare Warbird: Nord 3400

I’m trying to ID a rare NORD 3400 which was in Coventry, England
in 1987 and flown over to Spain for “Empire of the Sun”.
Pilot was Scott Bolan.

One of the machines headed out to Sweden circa 89-90 so that could well have been the flyer.

Three Nord 3400s are flying in Sweden; No 39 (SE-XMS), No 68 (SE-XNF) & No 121 (SE-XNV).

Our own TexanTomcat has a T-6, I think. Under rebuild.

I suspect I’ve posted these before, because I scanned them ages ago. More ‘Empire of the Sun’ remnants at Coventry. Got a few more to locate and scan….

Comparing the photos I’d say the plane in question is G-ZARA
as there is a small “aerial bump” on the cockpit roof of this
a/c as there is in the movie photo. Anyone else agree?

Located my pics of the Nords in the Visionair hangar at Coventry, only five of them (not six), the only serial number visible is ’37’ (G-ZARA), with the film aircraft visible in the shot behind – so we can be reasonably sure the one in the film is not ’37’.

Theres quite a good view of the plane in the film in the scene
where Jim arrives at the camp and walks across the field of
workers towards the T-6 Zero, you know the bit with all the
sparks flying everywhere – visually stunning.

Visible in the film for literally a “blink and miss” moment! (The scene where the Zeros are taking off for the Kamikaze mission). Looks good in camouflage, though.

one a/c was ever on the register.

G-ZARA is the one on the left nearest the camera. Sorry for the misinformation, two registered.:)

Fantastic shot of the Nord in its “Japanese” livery. That must have
been after it returned to the UK?

The pilot Scott Bolan, I think was American, he lived in 1988
anyway in Arizona. Tryed Googling to make contact but no luck.

However looking at the pic of 124 in W&R10 taken in October 85 it has no wings… That probably rules that out as well.

Wrecks and Relics gives 5, so maybe number 6 was the flyer. Two were entered into the auction at Coventry 37 which became G-ZARA and 124 which became G-BOSJ, both of which are in the pic posted above. However… G-BOSJ was N9048P previously, so maybe that was the one….

There have been two examples on the British register – G-ZARA and G-BOSJ
which is the machine that crashed.
