North Cumbria Wartime Crashes

My wife has been undertaking a local history project and there have been a few mentions of war time aircraft crashes.

Three in our immediate area:

ED 394 VN-R 50 sqdn Lanc that crashed at Brampton – kirkby Moor House in January 1943.

A transport that crashed near HallBankgate

A bomber that crashed on Cold Fell Pike above Tindale Tarn.

This last one was claimed to be a deep impact -so was just cairned and fenced.

Does anyone have any more detail on the last two aircraft Or any others ?

Area is Farlam, Hallbankgate and Tindale Cumbria.

There was a POW camp just north of here at Langley. Several mentions of POW’s helping out on farms during the war and “Osties” staying on after as well as a live ammo firing range below Tindale Fell

As Hallgatebank and Cold Fell are so close to each other I think you may have two versions of one crash.

The crash on Cold Fell was Dakota KG502 which flew into the top of the ridge on the North Western end of Cold Fell and was destroyed by fire killing all of the crew.

For this area I would suggest you contact Jim Corbett, www.acia.co.uk, as he has covered this area in a lot of detail in recent years.

Brian,

Have you’ve seen this about ED394:

http://www.mods-r-us.net/forums.php?m=posts&p=22707

And a candidate for the Cold Fell crash perhaps:
(from http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/1942_5.html)

Douglas C-47A-20-DK Skytrain
92965 (c/n 12824) to RAF as Dakota III KG502. Flew into Cold Fell,
Castle Carrock while descending in cloud Feb 3, 1946.

Hope this helps

Simon
