Spitfire UC indicator

I’ve been fiddling with a mk II Spit repro panel for a while, based on a flap lever and oxygen gauges and then finding out, too late, just how hellish expensive the rest of it is. Using some crash recovered parts as patterns I’ve made a reasonable repro UC indicator. Went into Cardiff today to pick up TSR2 model (mmm) and stopped at little antique shop to look at the usual tat. Considerable delight to find a complete original example for a very reasonable tenner:). Now i’ve got all the proper dimensions I’m going to continue production on the repro version. A few things I’m not sure about which maybe someone can help with: On the very early indicators there was no ‘pull down for night use’ screen and ‘Chassis’ was embossed at the top. There was something embossed on the bottom but what was it? Second, would anyone know where I could get little knurled screws for the center? google offers a variety of Indian companies but there must be someone over here. All the best, ian.

The knurled nut looks very like the sort that was used to secure wires to the terminals of lead acid batteries in the old days.

A search around vintage radio sites might be productive

Thanks for the lead Elliott, I’ll have a go on the lathe and when that goes pear shaped seek professional help. All the best, Ian

Hi Ian

Looks like a good repro – nice work, but even better, you won’t be needing it – that was a very good find.

Most engineers should be able to make you a batch of screws but they might be a bit pricier than you think. I have used a company down south called fastener solutions to get some ferrules made – i’m sure they could do it. Just google them!

I was that excited bargaining didn’t come into it. I nearly snatched the woman’s hand off!

In the height of the recession i would of offered 8 pounds as i think a tenner was a little steep!!
