There are quite a number of books that cover British aeroplanes/light aeroplanes that include types that took part in the Lympne trials in the early 1920s – as well as several of the Putnam series on British aircraft manufacturers. Lots of photos of aircraft taken at Lympne (during the trials) in these.

I wonder has anyone written a book specifically about the Lympne Trials (1922 to 26?)

Roger Smith.

Certainly fascinating are the Intelligence documents in the National Archive relating to the plot. Everything was on standby at Lympe to receive Herr Hitler, bundle him into a car and drive him up to London. Fighter Command were briefed as to recognition signals that would be fired by the defecting pilot and airfield defences were on stand-by. Under no circumstances were pilots or ground gunners to fire on a Focke Wulf Condor if it approached the south coast. When I interviewed Hans Baur, Hitler’s Personal Pilot, in about 1980 he got very aggitated when I broached the subject. Mind you, the softly back-lit bronze bust of “Der Fuhrer” in the corner of his lounge rather made one doubt that it was ever really on the cards!! Unless, of course, the bust was just to throw a smoke-screen as to his true allegiances and to keep the rest of his party-faithful friends happy and off the scent.

….or the intriguing story of the “Hitler Kidnap Plot” when he was to have been brought to Lympe by his defecting personal pilot, Hans Baur, in a Focke-Wulf Condor!

Look up the Light Aeroplane trials which took part at Lympe in the 1920s in Flight’s online archive.
