Hi guys Im looking for some opinions and help on a new book project I have started. After years of hoarding material I have finally started seriously researching Blackbushe’s history.I have always be fascinated by Blackbushe during its civil airport period 1947-1960 and the exotica that used to pass through. Amazing to think you could have flown to darkest Africa by an Airwork Viking, or have taken your bucket and spade to the med, all via Blackbushe.Sadly I was born 20 years too late!
Its wartime history has been well covered in the likes of the Action Station series but the civil years have largely been glossed over.I have a good deal of material about the war years from a friend who did some research in the 80’s, but still wish to go through the squadrons operational historys. I have also been picking the brains of a few local spotters and have good material from 1958-60.
Im interested to hear from anybody ,..
1. who has written similar books, and can advise me on the pitfalls of such a project. Cost of publishing, likely print run, possibly interested publishers etc
2. any of our more mature viewers who may have memories or material of the glory days.
3.Finally anybody with experience of visiting the national archives and RAFM archives. Has anybody gone through the ministry of civil aviation archives at Kew? Am I likely to find such delights as plans of the terminal buildings or find the 1950’s airport movement logs in some dusty corner?
I would also give my first born for a photo of the terminal area before 1960, well almost, will a cat do:rolleyes:
Thanks for any help

I can remember Blackbushe -as first seen by me about 1954 – Royal Blue coach service Southampton to Great West road (for LAP… fare about 5 shillings) used to pass BB and with aircraft parked both sides of the road – it was important for all spotters to be wideawake at that point.
Later when about 15 I stayed with my uncle on his farm near Lasham and cycled to BB every day during Farnborough week (1957) and also 1958…remember things like Westair C-46, A german registered Multoplan, US Navy Neptunes etc and many many Dakotas of all nationalities.
Those were the days……………!
