I toured the Canada Aviation Museum located in Ottawa over the weekend as they had been closed for the last two months and apparently some the exhibits had been moved around a bit. I think it does make the collection more photo friendly….The WWII collection has been rearranged so that can get better pictures of some of those aircraft for sure. You can close up and personal with their Lancaster now..
I also toured the storage hangar to see if any changes have occurred over there. See attached pictures of the main bldg with some notes.
Avro Lancaster X KB944
Avro Lancaster X KB848 Cockpit Section
Curtis Kittyhawk I 1076
Hawker Hurricane Mk VII 5584
Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX NH188
Messerschmitt BF109F-4 Werke no 10132
Westland Lysander III R9003
Boeing 247 D CF-JRQ – a very rare classic
Douglas DC-3 C-FTDJ

I think the Hispano Buchon spend a few years at the Western Canada Museum on loan when the 109 arrived at CAvM.
I had read on other forum about the Buchon being for sale a few years back but it still remains on site.
The Kittyhawk looks a bit faded and in need of fresh paint also. Not sure why but it seems to be covered with hand prints these days..

Will that Mk IX Spitfire NH188 ever lose that Brown/Green livery of 40 odd years? 🙁

Actually, the Bf 109 is a Friedrich and not a Gustav
Yeah, one of those funny round nosed jobbies. They all look the same to me. 😀

Thanks for the update – good to see.
what’s up with the Buchon, why is it up for sale? Does it not fit in with the theme of the collection any longer? Looks like a bit of a time capsule itself, it’d be a shame to see it diced up into some quasi Luftwaffe machine…
The Buchon was replaced in the collection’s affection by the 109G they obtained in the 1990s.
It’s nice it remains in it’s genuine colours, but it’s also not alone in those. Of course if anyone really wants to dictate its scheme…

Many thanks for the update, BC.
I have a few photos inherited from a friend and the location doesn’t seem to be Rockcliffe. Can someone help with a location for them. They are from 1994. There’s also a Seabee, a Vampire (058), T-33, and a Canuck.
A Pou-de-Ciel, a Sportsman (Amphibian) and a Mooney Mite (C-GHIY) may be elsewhere, a very garden-like setting.
Here are some sample pics.
Thank you
Alan

The new hangar building has windows on one end of it…it was opened to the public 2006..
Note the snow piled up against the windows….brrr

Thanks for posting a pic of it! I can’t recal ever seeing windows in the building? Mind you, I was last there in 1989.

I would guess that most museum goers would really not notice the post war mods to that Lancaster…it has held up pretty good for a restoration that was done I am guessing in the early 60’s…
Apparently it was converted a 10S model in the 50’s.

Some great pics there Andrew! I wish they would remove the post war exterior mods on the lancaster and the cockpit section. Not a true ww2 config for either of them right now.

Yes the Beau had spend many a hard Canadian winters parked outside there..so I was surprised/glad to see that someone had been into the Beau as the panel removals would lead one to believe…

The Beaufighter as it was in 1991 outside (sorry not good quality pic)…
