as an afterthought, myself not being an aerodynamist, did the Battle have some form of windscreen/air deflector in front of the aperture for the bomb aimer ? it seems there would have been an awful draught whistling into the fus

many thanks to all the contributors for successfully resolving this ID problem.just goes to show then how big an aeroplane the Battle was. the photo conveyed to me the idea a much larger aircraft was involved.

A bit late on this one, but here’s a photo from my files showing the bomb aimer’s position in a Battle, together with a corresponding external view which I found on t’net.
I think the second photo may have been taken during the same session as yours?

Well if I had to guess it looks like bomb aimers position in the main spar tub of a Battle.

I take it you are not absolutely sure. the proportions seem to point to a larger airframe. there again I was wrong about thinking it was a Whitley !
