Help, Dakota over S.Wales 2nd Dec 08

An elderly woman who is an ex ATC officer from Topcliffe Dakota era, has contacted us at St Athan.
She thinks she heard and saw a DC-3 flying over Caerphilly, South Wales on the 2nd of December, her only description was that it had white stripes.
Personally I think it was a mis-ident, as we had nothing on NOTAMS or low level warning, but does anyone here know if there was a Dakota in the area that day, and possibly which one?
I would love to prove her right!

Thanks in anticipation.

…nothing unusual bar the age of the type. Well theres two things!
We are very friendly with other ATCs here Moggy, we tend top talk to each other, especially Cardiff. We had notifaction of the Coventry Dak moves, just surprised this one slipped the net – no blame pointed or intended.

More positively, thanks for the link Le Harve, excellent pics and info.

I’m just wondering why you thought it would appear in NOTAMS?

It is only one more aircraft movement, nothing unusual bar the age of the type.

Well I can’t believe there wasn’t any input to this post, and it is with shame that I can tell you that we at St Athan were wrong and that the elderly WRAF was right!!

There was indeed a Dakota operating over S.Wales on the 2nd Dec, it transited E-W just south of Cardiff to as far as West Wales and returned over Caerphilly about half an hour later.
It was calling N1944A (reg) and wears its USAAF scheme of dark olive and light undersides with black and white invasion stripes, serial 315211 J8-B.
We can’t believe the lady (ex Topcliffe controller) was correct and we didn’t know about this move!

Anyone know who operates this particular Dak, and from where?
