DC-8 low yesterday?

Not sure if I should post this on the ‘Historic Aviation’ thread, but surely a DC-8 is historic? It’s certainly old!

Anyway, I had just turned off the A4 yesterday morning and was heading in SW direction toward Devizes when I suddenly saw something out of the corner of my right eye. It was a white DC-8 flyng very low in what appeared to be a shallow climb (also heading SW).

I’m by no means a ‘G-spotter’ but it looked quite beautiful with the sun shining brightly on it while everything else around was shrouded in grey mist!

However, my questions are:

1. DC-8 are quite rare these days aren’t they?

2. Where had it taken off from – Kemble?; Brize?

3. Where was it going?

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Nick

I flew DC8 for 5 years, passengers and cargo, 55/62/72 and that was really a superb aircraft to fly !! Anything else felt like a truck in the airliners industry …
Well, would love to fly her again …

Wonderful to hear (& see) that they’re STILL knocking-about

Last time I saw an active one (DC.8 freighter/cargo) was at Manston, amongst some old 707’s & 747-100’s (or, 200’s ?)

(Does) Anyone living round the Thanet areastill get to see these old-Girls flying cargo in & out of Manston ?????????

(if they do, I wouldn’t mind a trip down there in the New-Year, once the clocks go forward & the weather warms up :diablo:)

😮 I may have meant to type Lyneham – can’t remember where the Kemble reference was routed into now …… it’s an age thing 😀

Intersting visitor. Normaly the DC8’s that opperate from Lyneham on charter to the MOD belong to Air Charter Express who use 9G-AXA and 9G-AXB.

Probably Brize; the MOD have contracts with a number of civilian operators to move cargo to the Middle East. MK Airlines used to do quite a bit for them until they had some financial woes.

My first guess would be that it was one of Mildenhall’s RC135s

But then I could never tell the difference between a 707 and a DC8 anyway.
