The Beardmore Inflexible 1928

You’re never too old to discover some real oddities out there. Here’s one I learnt about at the Science Museum the other day. What a wingspan!

The wheel and tyre on the right was actually on the aircraft, the other one illustrates the interior design but was not actually fitted.

What a shame they stopped using spoked wheels on aircraft…..

Especially so as Sir George Cayley invented the spoked wheel to give his flying machines a light weight undercarriage and thereby accidentaly invented the bicycle as well 😉

Imagine the Airbus 380 with highly polished spoked wheels…cool!

They were made to licences from Rohrbach in Germany. Most of the family were flying boats, including the Beardmore Inverness.

Pretty impressive aircraft eh! It was new to me when I came across the tyre at Kensington too. Fairly attractive in a way, too
