Knowing that I have an interest in WWII era aircraft a friends father gave me some items he had collected. Post war he worked in a scrap yard nicknamed “Sandhurst Airport.” Apparently aircraft were flown into Blackbushe airport then trailered to the scrap yard to be broken up. In amongst the various aircraft parts was a flying helmet taken from a Spitfire, several cartridge cases and the two items photographed. One, I believe, is an escape compass, and the other a watch. The compass is just over ½ inch in diameter and about 3/16” deep. Body is brass with traces of black paint. Two of the major needle points are marked, one with a white dot, the opposite with two white dots and the tip red. The watch is 2” diameter and just over ½ inch deep, the case “silver”, and two sets of markings, outer 60 divisions, inner 24, and labelled G.C.T. The back is engraved:- AN 5740, MFR’S PART NO. 33106, SERIAL NO. H-10848, HAMILTON WATCH CO.
Can anyone identify them properly for me please?

One of them is a bath towel, white, slightly distorted. Worth about five quid new but very little used. Don’t know about the othere two items.

Wow! That’s the best item in the collection! Obviously, it is the white towel that Ursula Andress wore in “The Blue Max” 😉

Reply to Flat 12×2. No photos unfortunately but friends dad seems to remember Typhoons or Tempests, possibly Furies and Harvards/Texans. I have a joystick grip from a Har/Tex. that he gave me.
Thanks

I would guess that that would have been Skylines (?) which was in Florence Rd. off Yorktown Rd. Collage Town near Sandhurst. The site is now the car park behind the present offices fronting Yorktown Rd. if you look at Sat. images on google maps.
When I visited it in the late ’70’s there were Harvard fusalages & Vampire/Venom wings in there.
Could you get any more info ? like how many aircraft they scrapped & what kinds ? & any pics. ?

If the escape compass has a luminescent face I suggest that you treat it with a bit of caution, because in radiation terms they can be a little ‘hot’.

Many thanks guys. Had an idea what the two round things were but the white fluffy thing was really puzzling me cheers Cking.
Sorry, couldn’t resist and yes, I know I’m going to hell!
The watch is lovely, thanks for showing it to us.

Hi tona,
the other is a WW2 british ‘escape’ compass.
Hamilton AN5470 master navigation watches usually sell for between $350 and $500 on ebay depending on markings and condition.
They are a very nice and collectable watch, there is also a round metal box with a glass window for them (grey painted). Inside is a spring loaded cradle that the watch fits into.
cheers,
-John

Bit of detective work on google gives –
“Navigational Master Watch GCT-Hamilton Type 5470 – This was used by the US Army Air Corps for navigation in WW2”
