Tempest bits ID

A couple bits here from a Hawker Tempest V

The first image covering the two prong item has
CON/ELEC
718
ACDC
written on the top and is quite heavy.

(Perhaps Battery?)

the other bit is very beat up, the casing has split showing the rubber join of the two half’s. abit of wiring going on inside aswell with two connectors coming out at the top but i think more actually came out.. Alot of powdery substance came out of this also (battery solution?).

(Radio Battery?)

Any ideas or pictures of these items would be appreciated.

cheers

No not yet, but a full excavation is on the cards very soon with some great deep scan results to find.!

Most likely on the bomb rack as in the one illustrated above, but I’m not sure about the rocket rails – I would guess within the wing but I may well be wrong.

Hi

The box itself looks pretty similar but im still cleaning the inside of it at the moment so cant comment on the guts of the thing except for electrical connectors at the top.

but its looking very similar

would this of been within the bomb rack itself or in the body of the aircraft?

This is a 4-way Auto Selector Switch. There were various types, depending upon use but they all looked similar.

The 2-way version has only three electrical connections on the base of the box, the 4-way has five.

the boxes all seem to measure approx. 11cm x 11cm, which seems to tie in with the item in your photos.

The 4-Way Auto-Selector Switches, Type B, No. 2 and C, No. 2 were modified for the firing of rockets. These are the ones I would associate with the Tempest and Typhoon, but if the one you have been investigating carried bomb racks, it might have had another version fitted instead.

As I say, they are all fairly similar in appearance.

How does this compare with the lump in your photos?

that makes sense, it does have a circle aperture at one end like the picture but its blocked off.

even though this one has two wires coming out of the top i think four appeared out of the top which could be one for each release?

any better pics of one available?

cheers

I have a mint one for my seafire (though it goes too far aft for my cockpit, at the moment!!)
Recognised it when I saw it and will try to sort a photo if you like

Hi Neil

It would be component marked auto-selector switch. I may be wrong as it’s so damaged it’s hard to say for sure without eyeballing it up close.

The second part looks like an electrical junction box from a light series bomb carrier. This is an Air Ministry item – prefixed 5D. The rest of the stores ref escapes me! Alan will probably be able to confirm. More pics and a good blasting might help!

First piece is part of the battery.

No idea on the second.
