:p sorry to rain on anyones parade here, and I hope I’m wrong, shoot me down, but, let me tell you. After having spent the last 8 years banging in ridiculous hours week in /week out on “the best of the saudi bunch of warton scrappers”,671.(zf579), with some exceptionally talented minds and hands, there is more chance of a large comet landing in your back garden, than XS457 project turning out a ground runner. To build a Lightning to fast taxi status, it has to be built to the same standard as a flier. Sorry, but the day XS457 starts up, is the day I put on my cape and leap over tall buildings..

This may sound a little harsh but why dont you get XR724 sorted first as she is mainly complete[or is it 2 different owners]

Hi well i went up there 2 weeks ago and the project is still on.
Just awaiting undercover storage to start making steps with the project but most of the items are there now .
Its still a viable project as long as the resources are there and the man power but like i said a undercover area is needed to put the assembly in to so work can be accessed .

XS457 and its associated parts have now been moved to binbrook and are stored next to XR724 at the moment.
The project does have quite a lot of parts and enough to hopefully make a ground runner in time.
They even have two zero timed avons and one part avon which isnt easy to find nowadays.
The collection has gone through a bit of a change recently but 457 still lives on so all we can do is watch this space for now .

Nash,

Although the site says that it was last updated on the 29th of August this year I think it is the format that has changed and not the information, it has been like that for a good couple of years now.

It certainly looks like they want to make her a ground runner with engines but looking at the web site it does not fill me with confidence, they have what appears to be the bones of three different airframes, the fuselage itself is heavily stripped out.

Going by what has been said on another thread about re-building to running standard this looks like an impossible task (just have a chat to mjr about the Gatwick bird they are re-building).

Are you going to the twilight re-heat run at Brunty Nashio?.

regards,

John.

Peter,

As far as I know XS457 is just a cockpit section and was stored at Grainthorpe, I was told a couple of years back from one of the guys there that they were going to join XS457 nose with an ex Saudi airframe to make a ground running airframe.

As to what they meant by ground running is up to clarification, it might only have meant making the cockpit electrically live for public display, the Saudi airframe they had there was completely stripped out so getting engines/jetpipes/turbine gearbox and all the miles of wiring and piping together would be an impressive achievement.

Lets not forget that recently three of the full airframes there have moved on to new homes so who knows, something may be in the pipeline.

Best of luck to them all.

Regards,

John.
