Luftwaffe claims against Whirlwinds

Good evening all.

I’ve just finished cross-referencing the ORB’s of 137 and 263 Squadrons with Tony Woods’ claims_west.txt database at http://www.lesbutler.ip3.co.uk/tony/tonywood.htm. and came up with the following results – see attached excel file. Just remove the .txt and it should load ok. If not please PM and I’ll e-mail you the file.

I would appreciate very much your feedback on the accuracy of my analysis and any further information that you might have.

Thank you all in advance.

Hi Moggy

Thanks for the feedback.

In answer to your second question the ORB for both squadrons make no mention of a J Renvoize – so sorry on that one.

With respect to your first question it is on my to-do list over the summer holidays!

I’ve had a look at some of the Whirlwind combats against the Luftwaffe and found that although he made no claim at all Eddie Musgrave RAAF did shoot down a FW 190 of 8./JG26 on 28th January 1943 using 2 rings of deflection.

So it will be interesting so what turns up on both sides!

Thanks for that, very interesting.

Two questions. The first arising from the file – how many combat losses are not covered here (ie Whirlwinds downed but not claimed?

Second, In your researches have you ever come across any reference to Sgt(?) J Renvoize as a Whirlwind driver?

Cheers,

Moggy
