I am looking for photos of Prefect WE992 and Cadet Mk 3 XA310 during their time as military gliders. Can anybody help?

In theory, A G2 could fly the Valiant (ASW19b) but I never saw it happen, usually G1 or above

I think it was G1 for Prefect and Swallow.
The Prefect went out of service early eighties I think. The Swallow lasted to early 1990’s.
Was always amazed how weak the structure looked inside the Prefect whereas the Swallow was like a brick outhouse inside……………..

Yes in early 70’s definitely P2 (renamed G1) for Prefect, but at that time only C cat and above for the swallow…cos it was such a ‘hot’ ship obviously 😀
I imagined that the qualification was lowered when the ATC got some glass ships

Arclite, I didn’t think the Swallow actually replaced the Prefect, rather, didn’t they soldier on together? The Prefect had airbrakes, and were seen as a logical progression on from the Cadet (T31) before conversion to the Swallow. They were both to provide continuation training for Staff weren’t they?

Yes both the prefect and swallow were loaned to the various ATC gliding schools ,one had to be a ‘c’ cat instructor (or above) to fly the swallow(early seventies, these rules would change with time)
I cannot remember the min cat to fly the prefect in those days but P2(G1) could certainly fly them.
cheers baz

Thanks. WE992 was painted the same when I got it in 1980.
Great to see the old girl still about 😀
I see from my old log book that I last flew 992 at Halton in jan 72 !! funny we always used to get the single seaters on loan in the winter 😀
Presumably 981 is a T21,where was it based when with the ATC,the number looks familiar but it is not in my logbook !!
cheers baz

Prefect TX1 WE992
A sister aircraft, WE 985. Maybe not what you require, but close! 662 VGS Air Cadets Gliding School. HMS Condor Arbroath,1965. Ahh! Fond memories of sunny summers (as per slide, but also cold winters), in an a/c with soaring qualities akin to a brick ****house. Regards, Brian S.
