Can anybody help identify a pair of wheels and the origin of this propeller?
They items were shown to me this week by a gentleman whose family have been involved in aviation from the earliest days.
The wheel came out of a building which was used for aircraft many years ago, but that doesn’t mean it has been in there all that time. It is about 12 inches total diameter (the hub is 4 1/2 inches) The writing on the tyre states:
AERO
CODE (PA.19) – PA.19 is in a circle
4.95 – 3 ½
TI 7685 – in a recessed oblong

The propeller, has obviously been broken at some point but fortunately has writing on the hub:
DRG NO Z64
80HP CIIRRUS
RH
And on the other side:
D 6 – 4
P 4 – 8
ACG NO 10418
JULY/28

My big bumper book of de Havillands says that Cirrus engines were fitted to a number of DH60 Moths but that is all I know – it’s not my area of expertise. What other aircraft might this propeller have been fitted to?
Any help would be gratefully received by me and the owner of these.
Thanks in advance
Allan

There is a pair of identical wheels and are likely to be completely unrelated to the propeller. They may have been used on a boat launching trailer – in the way that many surplus parts were put to new uses.

The wheel is probably a tail wheel and is about the size one would see on a Rapide or similar sized small transport/trainer IMO. I’m sure someone will come up with the gen.

Anne – many thanks for that. Next time I meet him we can try to work out which of his relatives had either a Moth, Widgeon or an Avian. The Avian seems most likely but I won’t prejudge.
I did wonder about the prop stating the Cirrus II was 80hp.
Has anybody any ideas about the wheel? I thought it was most likely to be a tail wheel but that is the limit of my knowledge.

Thank you. This fits as I had hoped with rest of the provenance I have for the prop from the Duke of Windsor’s Pussmoth G-ABBS (which was eventually sold with a Fairey Reed prop).
Thanks again.

DH 5218 props appear to have been used on almost everything you could hang a wooden prop off but the only Gypsy III, 5218/C prop combo I have a record of is for the DH.80A Puss Moth.

There were only about three DH 60M’s (for National Flying Services) fitted with Cirrus engines and again they’re shown as Cirrus Mk III.
Would you possibly have details of Gipsy III drwg no 5218/C/4?

DRG NO Z64 used on the DH.60M, DH.60X, Avro Avian II, III, IIIA & IV and the Westland Widgeon III.

It’s interesting that the HP is given as 80HP as the Mk.2 Cirrus is more often shown as 85HP. The Mk.1 and III seem to see a lot of use in Moths but not the Mk2. The Avro Avian also used the Mk.2.
