win an Auster!.. Daily Sketch 1957

Evening all,
I came across an old (May 1957) cutting, from the long defunct Daily Sketch…win an Auster competition!

All you had to do was arrange a series of aeronautical cartoons in cleverest / most amusing order. The prize being an Auster Alpha + 1 years expenses..You can’t fly?..The Sketch will teach you how!!!

Did anyone ever win the comp..if so what was the the actual aircraft? (illustrated is Auster 5 G-APBE).

Chumpy.

I actually entered the competition!
The aircraft was G-APBE and it came to Newcastle on 21 May 1957.
I can’t remember much about the competition (Needless to say I didn’t win it!) except that when I applied I was sent one of those psychometric tests to fill in. You know the sort of thing – What thoughts go through your mind when you see a picture of a lighthouse, etc, etc. I filled it in but never heard any more. I often wonder what response I should have given to the lighthouse question!
I see that G-APBE still exists and belongs to a Mr. Woods.

Hi there Oz,
Nice bit of detective work on your part!

..Glad to see it was won by a decent sort of chap, double barreled name, London ‘gentlemans’ club address etc. Thought he would have read the Times, a friend of the Sketch’s proprietor perhaps!!

Cheers, Chumpy.

Hi Chumpy,

Looks like APBE was the actual aircraft in the comp. G-INFO shows it registered from Auster to Associated Newspapers in 1957 and then shortly afterwards to an Edward Armitage Holt, so presumably he was the lucky winner. It’s still on the CAA register and airliners.net has a piccie of it from 2003.

Reg. record: http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/HistoricalMaterial/G-APBE-1.pdf

Cheers.
