Sometime in the 1950s an Auster landed ‘unannounced’ in a field off of West Rd. Nr to ‘Butlins’ — possibly to ‘suss-out’the site now used by Clacton Aero Club, anyone out there have any details please?

Did it sink?
… I was thinking along the same lines hence the quotation marks. A report definitely says “south” but I presume the location would more likely to have been 4 miles south-west of Clacton (?). This particular Auster did live to fly another day (and in fact is extant but not airworthy).

An Auster forced landed in a snowstorm in March 1952 “four miles south of Clacton”. Could this be the one you had in mind? Possibly too early and certainly not a “suss-out”…..
