Spitfire 21 At Millbank

Does anyone remember a Spitfire MK21 displayed for a short time at the base of the Vickers building in Millbank London in the mid 1970s.
I was about 11 at the time which would make it 1975? I believe it was LA255 and it was the first late mark I had ever seen [ it was love at first site! ]
Being familiar with only the early marks it looked so modern!
There was an A4 flier sheet available which unfortunately I dont now have
which had a good illustration on it.
Did anybody take any pictures?

I can also remember seeing it there during an ATC trip to London – miserable bus driver would not stop so we could have a look though 🙁

I had a feeling it was LA198 and it would have been after 1976 when I saw it

Ooops, and to think that less than ten years later I would be working in the Millbank Tower annexe right behind the Spitfire…

I also remember seeing LA226 on the gate Biggin Hill in the early eighties.

I would suspect it might have been the 21 which came from South Marston via RAF Locking. (LA198?) “Our” Mk.21 LA255 was at Wittering throughout the 70’s.

Was it not LA226, which was normally the gate guard at the Vickers factory at South Marston?

Hi Graham,
I too saw it at Millbank and thought that was ‘rather cool’ at the age of about 10. I’ve asked around, but never come across even one photo, which seems odd. Even Mark12 doesn’t seem to have one. 🙁
Let’s hope your enquiry nets something!
