Wanted:Vickers Viscount for Transport Museum

The North Essex Transport Group are interested in acquiring the fuselage of a Vickers Viscount, the type of aircraft that operated from their locale. Does anyone know of anything that might be of interest to them? Is there a fuselage that is dumped or abandoned at some airfield – no longer needed? They are willing to consider a complete airframe and have the space to display it inside a disused hangar.

As you say Adrian G-APEY flew many times after the date of your flight and was still taking passengers almost 12 months after in the UK. I flew in it on 16.11.97 from East Midlands when operated by Heli-Air immediately prior to its leaving these shores for good. I remember photographing from behind the flight crew when travelling at low level over various locations including Wymeswold on that very bumpy flight.

I flew on several Viscounts on scheduled and charter operations and was always impressed by the excellent view the type offered. Happy days.

Thanks for those as I was there that day and flew on G-APEY from Heathrow on 19th April 1996. The reporters all claim that ‘THAT’ was the last UK passenger flight, but it wasn’t. The aircraft took VIPs and reporters up from Heathrow for a 30 minute flight, then returned. I then boarded the aircraft with others and we flew from Heathrow to Stansted.
THAT was the last Viscount flight from Heathrow, but then G-APEY went on to give enthusiast flights from Lydd, so notched up yet another few ‘last passenger flight’s. Incidently G-APEY (c/n 382) is the aircraft up for sale in Zaire, but the cost of bringing it back to UK might be far more than any museum could raise?

The other discussion centered around G-BAPF at the Home Office Fire School at Morton-in-Marsh. I was there last month and it still looks in pretty good condition, as it’s used for anti-terrorist training and not for fire-fighting. I am sure if the School was offered an alternative airliner fuselage, they would part with this Viscount.

A few nostalgic viscount videos just gone on You-tube:

Perhaps there should be a separate thread for each major aircraft type (particularly British ones!), instead of all the diverse various threads relating to, say, viscounts? Just call it the aircraft name ‘Viscount’.

Do you have any details on 3D-JAP – the Swaziland register is not readily obtainable. The c/n would be useful and does anybody have a picture?

The aircraft’s c/n is 382 and is now registered as 9Q-CON, so it might not be this one?

It would be great if another Viscount came back to its birth place to be not only in one piece but to fly would be the tops.
I remember when British Air Ferries was doing the round robin of the last passenger flying in the U.K. all those years ago.
Good luck to the project if it can go any further and at least get another frame back in the U.K.

An educated guess would be 3D-JAP. Could be wrong though 🙂

Viscount with radials?

If you put some radials in it they might be interested?

Can’t we persuade Air Atlantique to add it to their fleet and do passenger flights/airshow appearances 🙂

Phillip,
Guess what??
We got one!In a flyable condition on top of that. One of the last flying on the planet earth. My company named Global Airways is currently selling it.After several years of loyal services,we can’t cope with its gigantic consumption, that is why we are looking for a much fuel saver turbo prop.
If The North Essex Transport Group are still interested in acquiring a Vicker Viscount fuselage, parts and much more, please advise so we can discuss.

I spoke to Hanningfield metals the other day regarding a seperate matter, the Viscount Cockpit is up for sale (so to speak), the proprietor stated that the sale had been promised to someone and he is just waiting for the person to get back to him.

Heard it all before ! I have lost count of the number of times it has been sold only for them to mess the buyer about. Hope someone does get it finally because the longer it stays there the more it will deteriorate

From the responses here I gather that the Hanningfield Metals Viscount is a thorny subject. I just wondered if this was the ex Channel Airways cockpit section from the Historic Aircraft Museum at Southend which I last saw painted in BMA colours.
