It’s in for a total re-paint – strip to bare metal and out in the same scheme. I believe the owner wasn’t happy with the patchwork appearance, particularly on the undersides of the wings.

Tom.

Which just goes to show how much I know… 😮

I dont think a Warbird needs to look imaculate. why dont we see restored aircraft with stains, patches ect.

A paintjob is also a protection of the airframe. A standard job is cheaper than the custom patchwork jobs needed, to properly resemble a war-worn aircraft (while still providing the same protection).

You will find museum display aircraft painted to look like operational aircrafts, but they are also protected by the actual museum building.

Besides that, very few paintshops would like to deliver a “weathered” aircraft, as it reflects badly on the shop (regardless of us buffs loving it).

what about individual airframe histories?

The Air Britain books do that (and more) but for more details there are the 2 volumes by Arthur Pearcy published by Aston, ” Douglas DC3 Survivors” but of course these will only give the history upto 1988 when they were published.

Then theres the booklet by The Aviation Hobby Shop British Dakotas (1984),which although not overly detailed does contain some nice photos.

Although not fully detailed, this website provides quite an extensive list of US airframes:

For an affordable one-volume history, I enjoy the Douglas Propliners by Arthur Pearcy.
It tells you what your want to know without getting bogged down.

Also, Peter M. Bowers did an excellent DC-3 history.

You probably couldn’t do any better than the two volume set from Air Britain.
DC1, DC2,DC3 The First seventy years. A bit pricey perhaps but loads of info and photos. Nearly 750 pages altogether.

TomW only finished repainting it last year, so I doubt very much it’s in for paint – unless they are touching it up?

Adrian

The paint did look good; however it was being towed by an Air Livery tug,
and was being positioned in to one of their spray bays.

So one can only assume…..

Last year the markings were corrected, but it was not a full re-paint.

This is Wings Venture’s and is based at Oxford Airport. It was one of the three ship that displayed at the Duxford 90th Anniversary Airshow.

Just doing a background check and lo and behold, I and this bird have a past 😎

One of her former identities is K-683 of RDAF and I have flown quite a bit with all the Danish C-47.

15211 (c/n 19677) to Norwegian AF as 315211, then to Danish AF Oct 1953 as 68-683, later K-683, then to N3239W, then N5211A, then N1944A now with Wings Venture Ltd of Greenwich, CT. Airworthy and displayed Jul 2007 at Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford, UK.

Is it (N1944A) still based at Kemble?

No, she’s moved onto pastures new, not totally sure where though.
