Mosquito drop tanks question

Hi all,

Spent this afternoon at the site of the Mosquito recovery near Woubrugge
courtesy of the RNethAF, very sobering to see that aircraft had completely smashed on impact. The team showed us a part that they couldn’t identify.
I haven’t got any pics but it looked like a bombcarrier with a large steel bar of about 25 cm’s with it’s eye sttill locked in the release mechanism and at the other end was a washer and nut.I have a feeling that it might be from one of the underwing droptanks but cannot find anything in the books I have.

Does anyone (Bruce in particular) have any pics of said droptanks and fastening mechanism or can confirm that it is indeed of one of the outerwing pickup points for the droptanks. Do droptanks have a moulded plywood construction with a nut at the bottom?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

That’s it exactly what I meant, thanks, also on behalf of the RNethAF.

Hi Bruce and David,

Thanks for the replies, that was quick as usual. I have no pics unfortunately (can’t take them while rummaging through the heaps and heaps of wreckage, strangely relatively few wooden bits mostly wingspar and splinters but the metal is in excellent condition but due the the clay soil even the Merlins were smashed beyond recognition with only the cilinder banks being recognizable.

Bruce any pics showing the pickup system under the wing?

Cheers

Cees,

Sounds about right – the release mech is a stainless steel affair. The attachment for the tank is as you describe.

Anything likely to be of interest to me?

Kind regards

Hi Cees

the mosquito drop tanks do have a moulded ply construction, but as for their metal parts I don’t know.
