Hueys at Caloundra

Tucked away in a hangar opposite the Queensland Air Museum at Caloundra in June, was a pair of camouflaged UH-1s with arabic serials on the nose. Does anyone have any idea where they came from, or have any other information at all please?

Steve, lucky you visited when you did and saw these Bell 212 Twin Huey’s from the museum as the hanger is now almost complete and they aren’t visible from the road now. They were first noted by me on May 2 2008, weren’t there on my previous visit on April 10 so obviously arrived sometime in between).

The 2 machines are serialled 651 and 652 which is what they are marked as in arabic. Those serials are repeated (in english) on plates in the cockpit. They are both ex Royal AF of Oman machines and are stored by Curry-Kenny Aviation in reasonably good condition awaiting refurbishment (as firefighting aircraft) by the Heli-Centre here at Caloundra.

651 is a Bell built model, c/n 30803 and p/i was A40-AF while
652 has Bell c/n of 30671 and also an Agusta-Bell c/n 5550 which I can’t explain but guess there is a good reason for, perhaps built by Bell and finished/assembled at the Agusta factory. It has p/i’s of A40-AC and N90114.

Hope this helps,
Alan macdonald
