Leslie Miller, D.F.C.?

Picked up a couple of paperbacks for a few bob at a car boot a couple of weeks ago hoping they’d provide some reading material.

One, “They Who Trespass” by L.R.Martin, I’m not very enamoured with.
The second, “Strike Hard, Strike Sure” by Ralph Barker (which I picked up to look at properly only this evening) looks a lot more promising.

However this second one gave me a suprise when I opened it as, inside the front cover, is written the name “Leslie Miller”, an address in Rugby followed by “D.F.C.”

I don’t think I’ve tried to find medal winners – is it the London Gazette? or, if anybody fancies encouraging my laziness “your mission, should you wish to accept it…”

I’m guessing if Leslie Miller was RAF aircrew he might have been with Bomber Command? (the subject of the book). Guy Gibson was a Rugby man – wonder if they knew each other?

Oh no – my memory playing up again :-(. You’re right Creaking Door – Guy Gibson WASN’T born in Rugby (in Simla, India according to Wikipedia). But I am sure he married a Coventry woman – it could be that their marital home was in Rugby??

Thanks Jimbo27 I tried to look at the London Gazette site but couldn’t get p.581 to open 🙁

Thanks Stan – that’s some of the info I couldn’t get at.

Guy Gibson was a Rugby man…

Really? I was born and grew-up in Rugby and have never heard that before!

If it helps

155154 Leslie MILLER, F/O, 42 OTU, LG 26/1/45 p 581
184132 Leslie Frank MILLER, P/O, 35 Squadron, LG 17/4/45 p2027

Unfortunately the 35 Squadron History ‘We Act With One Accord’ isn’t indexed but I can’t find anything obvious.

There were two Leslie Miller’s with the DFC.

Go to the London Gazette site, search for page 581 in 1945, or page 2027 in 1945.
